I don't mean to be a grinch or anything, but wanted to just put out
something to think about regarding this message -

Why would this huge publishing company (which I recall is part of an empire
with many different media forms) make such an offer?

Yes, perhaps they've had Mother Theresa on the cell phone from her recovery
room. But also perhaps they get some benefit - like a cheap way to gather
an email mailing list of generous people, for their use or to sell to
others (as street mailing addresses are now sold). I'm not saying this is
so in this case, or even that it's inherently bad or should stop one from
participating in something like this, but I just thought it might be useful
to consider in cases like this, if one had a concern about getting junk
email.
