NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE MISSION STATEMENT

The National Campaign For Sustainable Agriculture is a network of diverse
groups whose mission is to shape national public policies to foster a
sustainable food and agricultural system -- one that is economically viable,
environmentally sound, socially just, and humane.

The Goals of the Campaign are to:
-- foster understanding, communication, and leadership development
-- engage in policy analysis and development
-- work together to advance common policy objectives

Specific objectives are to:
1. Foster interaction among food system stakeholders
2. Enhance grassroots capacity to participate in policy development
3. Expand grassroots, and national participation in Campaign activities
4. Establish mechanisms for communication, information sharing, and
dialogue at the national, regional, and state levels
5. Educate policy makers, other decision-makers, and the general public
about sustainable agriculture
6. Conduct policy analyses and develop common policy options and positions
7. Design and implement strategies to influence federal policy, and other
policies of national scope.

************************************************************
The Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture was originally formed by the
National Dialogue for Sustainable Agriculture to build the capacity of
grassroots groups and individuals to make changes in the 1995/96 Farm Bill.
The Farm Bill was passed in April 1996, but passing legislation is only half
the battle; there is still a lot of work to be done, new opportunities for
change, and a long way to go towards fulfilling our mission.

National agriculture policies have the potential to make the difference in
whether a family can prosper in farming, whether a community can revitalize
its rural economy, or whether a farmer can protect our natural resources. To
affect public policies, people, communities, and organizations need to work
together and with other interests to build power. Change begins at the
grassroots, not in Washington. The Campaign provides a unique and powerful
tool to affect the policies that thave a significant impact on the shape of
farming and rural communities.

What we can't do alone, we can do together! The Campaign strengthens the
power of member groups by providing a vehicle through which they can work
with other groups to affect national policy. The Campaign provides
information, materials, media, and tools to increase the capacity of member
organizations. The Campaign is a network of organizations that develop joint
positions and work in concert to advance them. Positions and strategies are
developed by a participatory process that involves member groups.
The Campaign is not a formal coalition and does not speak in the
name of all member groups when advocating a position. Members need not
endorse or work on all of the issues of the Campaign and are free to focus
on the issues of greatest concern to them. The Campaign may advocate
specific policy positions, with members having the opportunity to sign-on or
decline endorsement.
