european caution



In this discussion one can not generalize and speak of "European" caution 
because attitudes are different from one european country to another. 
Germany and Austria have a long tradition of opposition against genetic 
engineering, which is a sensitive subject in those countries since WW II. 
Opposition to GE in France and the UK seems to be more recent, it developed 
mainly as a consequence of increased caution regarding food after the 
problems with mad cow disease (BSE). Furthermore in France, the fact that 
genetically engineered products come from American companies makes it a lot 
simpler to be against them.
