JOB: Dean of the College of Applied Life Sciences



POSITION:		Dean of the College of Applied Life Sciences, 
			University of  Southwestern Louisiana

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Dean is the chief academic officer of the College
and reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The Dean
is responsible for the quality and economic viability of educational
programs within the College and will assist departments in the planning,
staffing, and administration of the undergraduate and graduate programs.
The Dean will provide management and leadership, enhance research
programs, and obtain external funding. The Dean will represent the College
at the local, state and national levels. 

QUALIFICATIONS:	The applicant must have a terminal degree 
(doctorate) in a discipline relevant to the College and its mission to 
foster sustainability. Teaching and administrative experience, solid 
research background with professional recognition, familiarity with 
disciplines represented by  both Departments of  the College, and 
involvement in professional organizations are strongly desired.  An 
understanding of current  sustainability  issues (within both social and 
environmental systems) is essential.  The applicant must possess vision, 
foster collegiality, and communicate effectively at all levels of the 
educational process.

ADMINISTRATIVE The University of Southwestern Louisiana is located in
Lafayette, Louisiana, one of the UNIT: fastest growing metropolitan areas
in the nation, with a present population of 109,957. The University is one
of nine publicly supported universities governed by the University of
Louisiana System. The University's approximately 17,000 students are
offered undergraduate degrees in 39 disciplines, the master's degree in 27
disciplines, and the doctorate in 7 disciplines. 

The College of Applied Life Sciences consists of the School of Human
Resources, the Department of Renewable Resources, and the Renewable
Resources Auxiliary Units. The School of Human Resources has a faculty of
11 with 700 majors in the degree programs of Hospitality Management,
Dietetics, Apparel Design and Merchandising, Child and Family Studies, and
Home Economics Education.  The department is accredited by AAFCS and ADA
with laboratory accreditation by NAEYC.  Accreditation for Hospitality
Management is currently being pursued from ACPHA.  There is also a Master
of Science Degree available in Human Resources. The Department of
Renewable Resources has a faculty of 10 with 440 majors in the degree
programs of Environmental and Sustainable Resources and Sustainable
Agriculture.  The College is presently enhancing the sustainability of
operations on its 750 acres of auxiliary properties, which will be used to
further the department's mission of sustainability through teaching,
research, and community service. 

SALARY: Competitive, depending upon qualifications and experience.

STARTING DATE:	Effective June 1, 1998; date of appointment can be 
adjusted dependent upon prior commitments.
