Hi Bob,
Just like in animals only the female makes the little ones. You could
either have female plants with no male pollinaters or you could have male
plants. I do not know enough about flower structures to be able to tell
the two apart.
Hollies are purely dioecious; a Hollie plant is either a male or female.
Other plants are monoecious, flowers of both sexes appear on the same plant
OR flowers are bi-sexual. Some plants are a little of both, or vary. Some
Red Maples (usually dioecious) can switch sex under stress, some have both
sexes on the same plant. Neat stuff. Hope this helps!
