TT: bugs in NYC, an ongoing saga

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
A while ago someone asked about the upcoming USDA embargo on all tree
products from NYC because of the non-native longhorn beetle that had
infested some trees in Brooklyn.

According to sources in the Department of Environmental Protection (NYC's
equivalent to the EPA) all the maples in the area around where the bugs
were found have been removed and they are surveying the area to replace
the trees.

According to sources opposed to our proposed waste export schemes (for
reasons having nothing what-so-ever to do with the bug) the states to
which NYC is presently exporting most of its waste are Pennsylvania,
Virginia and West Virginia. These same people think the idea of mucking
up the export scheme because of the potential threat to region-wide maples
is great. They are doing what they can to throw this monkey wrench into
the gears.

Two things should be noted. First, NYC has, to a limited extent, been
exporting its waste (a small portion of which is yard waste which might or
might not have longhorn beetles) for years. Second, it will be helpful
for the waste importers to know about the bugs. So, to my good friends in
such states, contact your friendly recycling activist types and see what
they think. No time like the present for a little coalition building.

And if the person who originally noted the USDA ban could find the
citation for the rest of us (who are just to lazy too look it up) that
would be great.
