Dear TreeTown Friends and colleagues,

I would like to share with you the following announcement:

The

"International Symposium on Sustainability of Chestnut Forest Ecosystems"

is being convened jointly by the Universita' degli Studi di Catania,
Catania (Italy) and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique/Centre
d'Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive, Montpellier (France). The Symposium
is planned for September 18-23, 1998 in Catania, Italy. Although the
focus is primarily Mediterranean (European) forests, the venue (the Island
of Sicily on the slopes of Mt. Etna) and the topic (biological interactions
of chestnut forests and their consequences on future possibilities of
sustainable development) seem to me to be attractive enough to invite North
American chestnut researchers to participate. For more information, to get
on the mailing list and receive the second announcement, write to :

p.s. The oldest chestnut tree in the world, the "Castagno dei Cento
Cavalli," is still alive (and well?) and growing very near Catania, near
the the tiny village of Tre Castagni, on the slopes of Etna. The tree,
which is actually a grove of three enormous trunks apparently united by a
common root system, has been estimated to be over one thousand years old!
This historic tree is illustrated in the wonderful book "Alberi Monumentali
d'Italia." Ferro, A. and Fontana, E. (eds.). Edizioni Abete, Rome. 373 pp.
1992.
