THE TECHNOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF ECO-VILLAGES

John Todd

".......I dedicate this talk to artists, in particular to Paul Winter and
to Haydn Stubbings, the extraordinary painter who created the panels in The
Universal Hall. I also want to honour the paths from which I draw: green
architecture and green materials; renewable energy research and
development; systems theory and analysis; biological and organic
agriculture; biodynamics; ecological landscape design; eco-forestry; space
colony research; restoration biology; ecological economics; permaculture;
traditions, or the old ways; advanced materials development; biospherics,
or Gaian research; and Taoism.

There has been a new field emerging over the last two decades called
ecological engineering, which is beginning to reach technological maturity,
and which can provide some of the technological foundations for
communities. For twenty-five years I have been searching for instructions
from the natural world, the kind that exist in a pond or a forest. Out of
this search has come a set of instructions and patterns that allow us
designers to begin to formulate technologies that are symbiotic and
supportive of the natural world, and serve humanity......."
