In Hawaii a product called a basaltic termite barrier has proven
effective. It is a gravel with a mesh size where termites cannot travel
through the interstitial spaces yet too large and heavy for termites to
relocate.

It is used in new construction. I haven't seen anything like this on
the mainland, though it may be available.....
