Re: GBlist:window warantees

Regarding the very interesting window thread and the admonition to check the
warranty, check the warranty--check the--; when you have to do some
replacing 10 or 15 years down the road, as has been pointed out to me, be
sure to find out exactly what must be replaced when the unit/seal fails--it
may be the entire sash.

On an entirely different subject, I am about to do a frost protected shallow
foundation. These are not allowed where code requirements rule here in
Kansas but fortunately there is no rule in the county in which I am
building. But I have the NAHB specs for direction. I would like to know
what experience there is out there for this relatively new way of handling
cold weather problems—I think I’ve read most of the articles on the subject.
I plan to double the minimal insulation requirements for my area under the
assumption it will more than double my money so to speak. Because I am
building on a slope I have to bring in a lot of fill to raise the lower end.
For that I am thinking of using a combination of rock topped with sand. Can
the latter be used for a heat sink where a heat sink is useful? Have any
of you had bad experiences with frost protected shallow foundations? I plan
to do a monolithic pour by the way.
			Thanks in advance, Sacie Lambertson
