Theme: Cleaner water for China and the world.
The 1st International Exhibition and Conference in both scope and
scalein China
China and the United States on October 26, 1997 issued a joint statement,
following the talks between visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US
President Bill Clinton. It is stated in the text of the joint statement that:
"China and the United States reaffirm the importance of bilateral
co-operation across the broad range of environmental issues, as
evidenced by the establishment of the China-US Forum on Environment
and Development in March 1997."
Water pollution, wastewater treatment, and water resources protection have
been the top priority that China has to handle with. China is one of the
severest water resource shortage countries in the world, with only 28.1% of
world average per capita. Water pollution and water shortage become
bottlenecks in economic development and affect public's lives.
To tackle the problem, China will spend US$ 8 billion dollars to clean up "3
lakes and 3 rivers" and to provide clean water for all the main cities in the
next few years. It is also estimated that China will need to spend more than
US$ 54.2 billion dollars on environmental protection projects that required
foreign technology, equipment, and management skills.
The exhibition and conference will provide a unique opportunity for water
treatment companies and institutions all over the world to display their
latest technologies and equipment to China. It is also a unique chance for
those who are interested in China's water issues to understand what China
needs and provide their experiences and know-how to Chinese partners. The
exhibition and conference will organize specific workshops on water
pollution and water resource protection in "3 lakes and 3 rivers", and will
introduce about 100 water-wastewater treatment projects for international
bids. This is also a call for international cooperation to map out a
strategy for China to have cleaner water and sustain the economic
development for the 21st century.
This is the 1st International Exhibition and Conference in both scope and
scale in China. It is sponsored by three state agencies,
China State Science & Technology Commissions (SSTC),
China Ministry of Construction (MC),
China National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA).
