WHO'S BEEN DROPPING BY LATELY?
AND WOT THEY SAID...

Great site, great photos, Phil Franks has (unwittingly at the time) captured some fascinating people and events here. From a Motorheadbangers point of view, the early Lemmy photo is a gem. There are also a couple of books I didn't know about to buy from Amazon and should read thoroughly. Top notch!

Hey I came on whilst looking for stuff on the Pink Fairies. I'm feeding my boy full of stuff from the olden days. Remember a guy called 'Jesus' who was always dancing around with his shirt off at the Roundhouse. Maybe he wasn't.

What a great find. I had met Arabella on my way to Glastonbury 1971 (70?) anywho, she was at a bus stop in London and we boarded together, had a chat. She was so kind to a blathering american. I was llving in west ealing at the time, but camping with loads of souls on the dole. Lots of memories of David Bowie, Davin? Colin from Cirenchester, sleeping with the rain on my face and the "Lion Witch and the Wardrode" amid the hills of the Tor. Best yet laughing all night.

A big note of thanks from a Genesis fan. Those photos of the "Trespass" era on your site are priceless. It is also fortuitous that you should post a photo of John Mayhew, the drummer, as he just resurfaced from total obscurity after 36 years!

The story from the Yes Album shootings are great as well, Thanks again!

Hello,
I just got a beautiful black and white photo by Dave Gurley that is around 15 years old. I have been surching the web to find as much info. on this man as I can and have only hit walls. Granted I am not very good with computers, but I can do a Google search. Can you help me find information about this brilliant artist? I just love this piece of art, and would like to know more about the man behind it.
Take Care,

I worked at the American Screw Plant in Santiago, Chile for two years. I was sent to Chile to instruct the local operators how to set up and run the antiquated machines that were sent to Chile in 1950. It was an amazing experience for me at the age of 21. While working in Santiago, I met my future wife, a beautiful Chilena. I also made some very good friends during my stay and until this day hold many fine and wonderful memories of Chile and its people.

I was about 15 or 16 when I went to see Ten Years After in concert at the Assembly Hall in Champaign, IL. It was either 1970 or 1971. My 2 girlfriends and I met some dudes in the audience that invited us back to The Holiday Inn after the concert. Well- they introduced themselves as the production managers of The Doors. They were very wealthy- long leather coats, nice leather boots and were just classy- at least to a 15 year old. They said that Ten Years After would be there after the concert to party with them. We were very impressed with the whole situation. My girlfriend to this day swears that one of the guys was Jim Morrison. All of these years I've wondered if he was indeed Jim. Would there be any way for me to E-mail one of Ten Years After guys to ask if Jim Morrison was in Champaign Illinois for that concert??? How would I go about this?? The guys that invited us to the party were quite the partiers I think. They had bricks of hash laying around the motel room, bongs everywhere and had $100 bills marking places in the Champaign phone book. They told us to order any food that we wanted to be delivered. They, of course, wanted us to spend the night but for once in my life I was good and said that I had highschool to attend in the morning.
Let me hear from you with any ideas on how to research this thing. Thanks- Patti

Hey Phil!
Ever think of combining your photo's with writing and putting out a book? You've got a great writing style. Very Hunter S. Thompson. I hate you. However, all jealousy aside, I had fun reading about your escapades. I wrote a book about my first year of college in 1975. Lotta sex, drugs, rock 'n roll. Okay, not much sex. But it was all rather amusing, what I remember of it. You can check out the site. There's some free chapters posted so you don't have to buy the book to get the gist. I figure I owe you after reading this page. Did I mention I hate you?

Ello Phil,

It's been a while since me last uncloaking here (1998).
I just got back from spending three years based in Turkey.
Whilst base there I went to England for three gigs which two were Steve Hillage and Miquette now known as System 7 and they currently just released a CD as Mirror System. I finally got to chew the rag with Steve (Manchester Dec 2004 gig) and I did mention to him that you wanted to make contact once again but of course I did not have your addy with me at the time. He did say he would like to hear from you. If you have his web site drop Steve a note if not here is a link to them...

http://www.a-wave.com/system7 ...

I thought I would not totally get into their new waves but I can tell ya they have come a long way and recently brought back the sliding gliding waves once again via a new dimensional upper level shift. Their last three releases have taken me back to that long lost space via their newer genre tempo. Their Encantado CD is a five star salute...

Peace and Keep Zee Faith

Hello Again!
I was surprised to find you still here after all these years. I originally signed the guestbook on May 5th, 1997 and found my old post by doing a search on Oysterboys which was what I went by back then. The world has certainly changed over the past 8 years.
The most important thing I've learned since then is this: Find the love of your life and stay with her forever. Nothing else matters and everything else will fall into place as it may.
I try to live by the Wiccan crede, to paraphrase: An it harm none, do what ye will. Think about it.

Wow!!! What a treasure trove. I came to this site whilst looking for info on the Edgar Broughton Band, I understand that theyr'e still involved in music. Any gigs planned?? Please can anyone help. I've bought all the recent cd re-issues. I'm 33 years old, too young to have seen many of my favourite bands, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones (in the Brian Jones/Mick Taylor days). I believe that the EBB are vastly under estimated musicians. Great stuff on Hawkwind, (I'll have to let my husband know). Also of interest was the Friends/Friendz pages. I've been reading All Dressed Up and Days In The Life by Jonathon Green, it's great to put a face to some of the people mentioned. To me, a teenager in Thatcher's Britian, I'm of the conclusion the late 1960's seems an exiting, vibrant time to have been young. The 80's seem dull and gloomy in comparison. OK I wasn't there, due to an accident of birth. Will Dr Who let me borrow his tardis, so I can transport a youthful me to this time? Many thanks for sharing your photos/memories Phil and all concerned.

I have seen and own most of this genius's films. I feel very connected to him as our humor is very much alike. Years ago when I taught sexuality to teens in a psychiatric ward I quoted him. You see I am a nurse so I know how the body functions and therefore "I'm wonderfull". We do not get his films in the Fargo Moorhead area so when I would be out of town I woulsd see his movies. I bought "Shadow anf Fog sight un seen for $100.00 and I am a poor nurse, but you can't put $ on how much Woody does for the mood and general well being of a person. My goal in like is to meet him, however it may have to be in the outer relms after I am able to leave my body. Hopefully thias lifetime. Before we had VCR tapes I taped Annie Hall on a cassette tape and would go to sleep every nigtht listening. I even took it to the hospital when I had to have surgery and played it. I think he is a wonderful Man who couldn't hurt a fly. I will continue to by his films [ now on DVD ].I say this whole wourld is a better place because we are blessed with Woody. May he live on!!!!! and on!! and on!!!!!! Cyd

Is this by any chance the Daphne Richardson that lived in Ladbroke Grove, London in 1971, and who died in 1973? If so, I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who knew her. I vividly remember an album of amazing photographs in her flat, and have always wondered what happened to it.

Thanks so much for the article on Tom Donahue. I had no idea he had passed. I can almost hear his voice now, 3 am, KYA Radio In SF in the 60's. He had all of us teenagers spellbound growing up in the Bay Area. I miss the tunes.

Really great work. It is very important to archive this stuff. It may have seemed like ephemera at the time (or maybe it didn't) but it must be kept -- this is as good a place as any. I just picked up some old copies of Friends/Frendz in a secondhand bookshop in North London and wonder if anyone is archiving this material properly (I guess the British Museum has copies but is there some university department somewhere that's lovingly taking care of this?

Anyway I'm rambling, but it's truly wonderful to find this site.

hola, Coming thru the cobwebs of time... please be attentive!
We have a lot of paperworks from Lady June in Deia. I have been asked if you would know of someone who could do something with it all... it has been stored away all this time, unused!
I was appointed a right of attornay at the time of her death with a friend of mine Frances Graves who has the papers in question. Please let me know thru my E-mail if you have any ideas. Thanks. Love. Cyrille.

Folks, I'm currently working on a biography of Hawkwind and would be most interested to hear from anybody who has recollections of the Notting Hill, Ladbrooke Grove scene at the start of the 1970s, were involved with the band, or can offer insights into the work and career of Barney Bubbles. Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated and fully credited in the text of the book. Thanks!

I just enjoyed myself when I saw the pictures of Elton John. I am a really big fan I saw him in concert April 22nd of this year (2003) and he was wonderful. I got so carried away that I went towards the front of the stage and stood there and screamed because I wanted him to look at me so I could wave. Then the security kicked me out. Then I begged them to let me back in and they did but I had to stay in my seat which was in section 8 row p seat 6. It was not a really good view but I watched the big screens.

A Chumbawamba Press Release

What if someone gave a war and Nobody came?
- Allen Ginsberg

Chumbawamba offer track as mp3 download to Anti-war organisations and coalition sites

Chumbawamba's new track Jacob's Ladder (Not In My Name) isn't anti-American or pro-terrorism but it is anti-war. The band changed the words of Jacob's Ladder from their latest album Readymades, to express the fury and revulsion at the blatant lies and hypocrisy being broadcast to create a climate for war.

GW Bush's attempt to distract attention from US domestic policy by staging a war against Iraq isn't big or clever and Chumbawamba are among the artists and activists refusing to stay silent as Bush pushes the world to war.

Jacob's Ladder (Not In My Name) is a sweet and breakbeat reminder that the oil and arms industries do not have carte blanche to cause murder and mayhem in search of profit. Chumbawamba's sweet harmonies swell with anger at the willingness to sacrifice innocent civilians for oil and power

It condemns Tony Blair's desperate attempt to back up GW Bush's every move - in a "special" relationship where one side does all the giving - Jacob's Ladder (Not In My Name) refuses to see GW Bush's warmongering as a war against terror. War is terrorism with a bigger budget!

Fellow Hawkfans

A grim day in the history of Hawkwind dawns on us. Yes today Dave Brock takes Nik Turner to court to stop Nik using the name Xhawkwind. Nik can't afford the fight so Dave with the power and money will probably win. It's not just Nik who will loose out, the band includes many of the original line up including: Terry Ollis-Drums, Mick Slattery-Guitar, Thomas Crimble-Bass, plus others who have guested like Del Dettmar and Dik Mik. The fans will be the real ones to loose out, because they might not get that chance to see them play thanks to Dave's power trip! A tour has been planned for later this year, so far Xhawkwind have played just a few gigs, which have gone really well. The crowds have enjoyed hearing the old songs being played in the 70's style, that's what put them on the map in the first place after all. Xhawkwind don't play any of the songs Dave wrote because they don't want to face any further legal action, but they can play the songs written by Bob Calvert and group compositions, which means they have still got a decent repertoire. Xhawkwind played at the Glastonbury festival, jamming some of the old songs and getting a great reception.

Orgone Accumulator

Any Hawkwind fan would have loved to have seen that, 1500 lucky ones did! Don't let Dave Brock ruin it for everyone. Write to the papers, contact the Hawkwind website, let people know what you feel about it.

A concerned fan

Thanx for the memories you've stirred.
Steve and Eddy and Portobello Road where we discussed the colour of grass on the new colour telly. Carried it in, turned it on, and saw green grass. There was a chair without any seat that straights would fall thru when directed to it. An incredible switchboard that switched no-where. People phoned, sometimes, about pigeons because the office had been used b4 by the RSPCA or somesuch. I spent many stoned hours in that office. Many stoned hours looking out of the window at the world passing by. Or so it seemed.
Steve and Patacake at Richmond... I loved you then, my memory loves you still...
Somewhere I have a letter on SeaTribe notepaper telling us that Robin Ashcroft was sacked.
How hungry did Malcolm and I realy get on Redsands. I would dearly love to read that log again.

I just found out that Barney Bubbles is dead. He and I met in the 60's when we both lived in West Kensington, London. We became great friends-did everything from drinks in the Hand & Flower to trips in the Love Bus to Middle Earth and beyond. He and I and Max all moved in together at 305 Portobello Road My window was top front. We lost touch and now he's lost forever. I miss him more than life. Love to all that shared his wonderful being. Phil,

My daughter Ducie (now 27, works at MTV) sent me one of your photos (of me) which she found in your website. I think Alan Marcuson is involved somewhere in this act. Anyway, it prompted me to take a visit to your site and wander down memory lane for a while. Great stuff.

Two bits of gossip. First, I've been in touch with Bob Greenfield quite a lot recently as Sandy (his son) stayed with us last year while doing a term at Oxford. He's as complex and interesting as his dad! But better looking.

Second, I've just come back from New Zealand where I spend some time with Nicky Hepworth, who I'm sure you know. She's in great shape. Two lively kids (12 and 15) and just moving house from Wellington to Queenstown, if that means anything to you.

Keep well.

Hi Phil,

Just to say thanx for the cheque, fifty pee isn't a lot but it's nice to see old debts cleared. I'm working for the Sunday Times now. Political journalist. Hah, there's an oxymoron. The sooner we get this Thatcher bitch out the better. Your son Elton sends his love and will come over to see you as soon as they get Concorde working. Hope you make some money out of your photography. Mum always wanted you to get a proper job, but what the hell. And Mitzi sends her love. She's a Lesbian now, says it was due to that night we spent at the Pink Fairies gig in Trafalger Square.
Do come over for the weekend and bring Sarah. We could do some "toast"! Hah!

Stay hep baby.

Hi Phil,

Just thought I'd drop you a line. It's been a long time since we communed. Little Elton is all grown up, you'd be proud of him. He's works in the music industry now, and has your eyes. Maybe one day he'll meet his real daddy! I have just got off the dole and have my first job with Underpriviledged Young People. Some of them are almost human! Sister Mitzi sends her love, and still wonders if you ever discovered where the batteries went. On a serious note, I really have to ask you for the bread I loaned you in 1970. I could really use it now. Did you ever find my dog?

Love and peace, man. Stay hep.

I was there man, like in the Seventies, y 'know? Got any more of that stuff? Yeah, where was I? Oh right. RIGHT! Like the Pink Fairies, Hawkind, Edgar Broughton, and the Isle of Wight Festival, and just, er, EVERYTHING man, Far out. Eh? Yeah, cool. OK man, it's COOL, alright? . I'll just put it out it if the pigs turn up. Yeah. No man, I'm not hoggin' it, OK? Jeez, there's no need to come on heavy, it's only a fucking Embassy Tipped. Is it alright if I have a bath? Now listen man, I loaned you some bread at the Isle of Wight festival. I'm sure it was you because you had, like a beard and everything. I don't wanna come on like, y'know, OVERBEARING with this heavy Capitalist shit man, but, er. Where was I? Hey Phil! Can I make some toast? Yeah right. The fence must die. Right on, man. You seen my dog? Scuse me. Four o'clock, man.

Groovy site baby. Wow. Far out. er... Hey! That's my toast! Ok, you can have some. Peace, man, peace. Just put the fucking Luger down, OK? Yeah. Jeez, Have some toast, Man, Have some toast.

That would definitely be the best day of my life. Having discovered your site is a pure thrill. Please keep up the great work, and feel free to keep me posted on anything new and exciting. It was a great and very special time in my life, those few years with partying, smoking and just LIVING!!

thanks Hawkwind and hope you all are well!

Chunga's Revenge was the first FZ album I owned. My grandmother gave it to me on my 14th or 15th birthday, and it remains one of my favorites yet. I especially liked the cover photo. I always wondered what the F FZ was doing in that cropped cover photo. I figured he was performing vocally as there's a lot of screaming, or at very least, extreme vocals on the album. But it just seemed so VERY unFranklike to sing with the apparent abandon I thought the photo represented. Turns out he was yawning. A ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!

I just want to add a comment about Viv Stanshall, whom I had the great pleasure to meet a couple of times. He was an exceptional man and had an amazing 'presence' when in his company. He entertained people of all ages and backgrounds, and though occasionally shocking, never intended to hurt or offend anyone. I have very fond memories of afternoons listening to his music and poetry on his houseboat, and was very sad to read of his passing away a few years ago. One souvenir I do have, is a tape I made of him 'rambling' one afternoon at my house in Oxford and the shrieks of delight from my young children in the background. May his memory live on.

Just got back from seeing John Cale here at the Sky Church in Seattle. Yes, he is just as sublime, supurb and spine chilling as he ever was. The new songs stood up to the classics and the two musicians playing with him worthy of his talent. Hey, he even got cat calls from females..they beat me to it..I've seen him in various guises in several different countries and decades (since solo gigs LA 1977) and this was one of the best.
Thank you for a great webwite too.

Only sometimes I can find tapes with prog or cheap piracy copies of CD , but it is very rare. I suffer affliction because it is impossible for me to listen music that I love. You are my last chance. Anyone remember seeing the Fairies at the Dagenham Roundhouse, 1973/74 or thereabouts - Couldn't get over Russell Hunter's bass drum artwork on his double silver sparkle ludwig kit. I remember Twink broke a bass drum head, but instead of stopping he grabbed a floor tom tom, took it to the front of the stage and carried on! The roadies meanwhile changed his BD head and after a few minutes Twink was flailing away behind the kit again! Pretty seamless for a bunch of wasted hippies... Miss the Roundhouse days a lot. Clive, John of Hornchurch band ? - John lived in Herbert rd? Are u out there?? Anyone remember Jim Moores music shop in Hornchurch??

I must confess that I've never really read the liner notes of Chunga's Revenge too closely (hence my unfamiliarity with your name/work/reputation). However, being a huge Zappa fan (and a film freak to boot)I felt compelled to tell you that the cover pic from Chunga's was used on the promotional poster which accompanied Frank's Australian tour of early of 1976. Indeed, it was this poster which first made me aware of Zappa, although I didn't start listening to his music until seven years later when my intellect was a little more developed and ready for the onslaught. Strangly enough it never occured to me that he was yawning - I always thought he was bellowing into a (off left of frame) microphone. That's my flashback. Thanx for your time (and your pictures).

Hiya Phil,
Thanks for including me in your Viscount Weymouth story. I'd sure like to hear from you, Jonathan Greene, Jerome Burne, Carinthia West, and Anthony Haden-Guest.
We sure had a great time in London 1970-71!

I'm only interested in Bro. Johnny Winter. He's the best.
No disrespect for any other true-bluesman, anybody who
knows the blues would have to admit, Johnny can put you
in touch and take you right on down that Highway 61.
Thanks for the tour.

Hey, now I know what I was doing 22nd Sept 1973, I was on top of the left hand speaker stack in Harlow Town Park with a can of beer and a head full of Hawkwind.
Also big fan of Pink Fairies, Freak Bros., Terry Southern, Leary and the whole damn scene. You just can't get that electric 70s acid nowadays though.
