I have heard from others that it can be done, but I am looking for somebody with experience doing this that I can ask questions of. Any takers? Date: Sun, 20 Apr 1997 17:09:38 -0500 (CDT) From: mjsilva@ix.netcom.com Subject: Socket mounting hint Hi all, Since the list is a little slow I thought I'd pass on a construction hint. In trying to mount some ceramic octal sockets (retainer ring style) this morning I found that the 1.125" hole I cut with my unibit was just a tad too small, but the next larger size was much too big. Then I measured the socket (novel idea!) and it really wanted a 1.150" hole. I was going to try grinding it out, but decided to take a few swipes at it with a deburring tool (the kind with the blade that looks like a crooked finger) and in only a few passes I had a perfect fit. A very versatile tool indeed! I don't know if these retainer-ring sockets will want to rotate in their mounting holes, but it would be very easy to screw down a small tab that would mesh into one of the recesses in the socket, holding it in place. It may even be possible to use a ground lug, thus killing two birds. BTW, you can probably guess how I found out the next size was much too big. Luckily I had another style of socket that fit *that* hole, so I suppose I got away with one... 73, Mike, KK6GM

Someone has mentioned that the freq range is different. The latter run from 4.9 to 5.5 MHz. Thanx! -John Sehring (Sat, Apr 19, 1997 2:30 am MT @Baker, Montana) UCC WB2EQG

My local Home Depot has "official" Unibits up to 1/2" and 3/4", and Greenlee Kwik-Steppers above that (the one I have goes to 1-3/8"). Otherwise, I've heard electrical supply shops carry them in one brand or another. 73, Mike, KK6GM

So the R4-C might be aaptable the the early ones but not the other way.

They are used for relays but they fit octal tubes just fine. They mount on top of the surface with a couple of 6-32 screws. The only possible drawback is they would add about 1/2 inch of lead length to your connections, which might be important for cathode or screen bypass grounding at VHF. At HF there should be no problem. Any distributor of industrial components should have them. 73, Bill W7TI
