Even ran into a few of the gang (Hi, Dave!), but met about as many empty spaces, working from the list. Oh, well. Slept late & didn't arrive 'til 2pm. Was hoping to find a Sky Buddy, or a Millen 90801. Nope. (At 2pm Sat, Dream On!) But guess what! I found a Mac! Dear Tom Perrera had a table full of keys, with Tom-type prices (doggone it, he knows the market too well!). I showed up to yack and see if I could fondle some of the nicer ones (he had *three* Cootie keys!), and got a chance to play with a vertical Vibroplex (which works a *lot* better than I would have thought). Was pinin' over the Macs, and lo and behold, he had one sans nameplate and repainted that was within my budget! 'Tis a fine thing--just hope I have time to use it. Also ended up with a UK WWII-ish key (says something about "8AMP" but I 'spect it's an ID number--and beseems me this critter is sort of the same thing as a J-38 in terms of postwar availability in country of origin), plus a cute "new antique," a NIB key made for USN in '44, and very nice. Can't decide if it was intended as a trainer or a real key or what--has a *jack* for a wedge plug in the side! Solid oval base, most unusual. That was about it, though I did find a couple of the small-skirt GE/National verniers, as used in the BC-375(?)--somebody here was looking for same and if he still is, lemme know; paid $5.00 @ for this set. Also a crystal...but not that kind--a nifty semi-fixed galena detecting crystal, 1920s-ish. Was a good day. Still haven't ever gone inside the buildings at the Dayton Hamvention--they tell me ER & Vibroplex are in there but it's a lot of walking for a few stops and too much solid-state stuff around 'em. ;) 73, --Bobbi PS: Once again, the truck drivers on I-70 proved themselves the people I most like to share a highway with--they're rational, predictable and polite (at least while driving). Of course they also laugh profusely at the tiny Suzuki Samuri zipping along at 65+mph--this is good, it's so small they might not see it otherwise! (The power/weight ratio of the Suzuki is about the same as a semi--so I usually end up around trucks).

It's a small double beam power tetrode for VHF push-pull output usage. The pinning for QQE02/5 is: 1: grid I 2: common cathode 3: grid II 4,5: heater 6: plate I 7: common screen grid 8: plate II 9: heater center tap Some data below: C telegraphy: Va = 180V, Vg2 = 180V, Ia = 56mA, Po = 5.8W at 500 MHz C ag2 mod: Va = 180V, Vg2 = 180V, Ia = 40mA, Po = 4.2W at 500 MHz Values are for both halves in push-pull. Heater: 6.3V 0.6A (pin 4+5 to 9) or 12.6V 0.3A (pin 4 to 5) Please note that it is a close relative, not a replacement but you should be able to determine if the pinning is the same. > And some JAN 5719 Valves (tubes) > 8 lead miniature tube > about 0.375 " diameter X 1.25" long with 1.5" leads > Military PN 5960-00-228-0636 > Package says simalar to CV-4008 5719 is an AF triode in an 8 wire submini package. Pinning is: 1: grid 2,4,7: not connected 3,6: heater 5: cathode 8: plate Pin numbering is the same as normal sized tubes, bottom view with the gap down, pin 1 first to left. Typical operating point: Va = 100V, Rk = 1.5kohm, Ia = 0.73mA, S = 1.7mA/V, Ri = 41kohm mu = 70 Max Pa = 0.55W, Max Ik = 3.3mA, Peak Vkf = 200V Heater is 6.3V 0.15A 73 - --- Jan, SM5GNN Linkoeping, Sweden

If you are lazy, copy or rename gzip.exe to gunzip.exe. Invoke as: gunzip filename.xxz Clever proggie. It checks what name it was invoked as and if it founds itself by name gunzip, defaults to "-d". Can be fixed somewhat by reducing drive to filter and a bit of sheilding around filter. Additional xtals may be added for better skirts too. It's a radio that is cheap enough and common enough to modify to your hearts content. Can be put on 20m instead of 15. I added a little VFO to mine, built in. Funky but worked (well chirped a bit :-) Jeff in Hawaii has it now. Where is Jeff, did the 'lil boat sink while he was sleeping? Only problem I've seen with them is the bandswitch. Ceramic from a hamfest will fix that. - -bob wb4mnf

I heard it yesterday (Saturday). It was in the afternoon. Don't recomemeber the exact time, but I think it was about 4:30 PM PDT. The NCS was reading from a long list of WTB and WTS stuff. Mostly modern rice-boxes, but some not. He was operating VOX and was being broken often. He would then get the two contacts together. I know a member of this list was looking for a Millen grid-dip meter and there was one offered as the last item in the list. Whoever offered it wanted $80 for it complete, in the case, with all coils. That is all I know, but I will listen today and see what else I can learn. My SSB rig is broken and I am not really in any real hurry to fix it. I'm having too much fun with the 109! Ken W7EKB
Date: Sun, 18 May 1997 10:29:18 -0500 (CDT) From: Bob Roehrig <broehrig@admin.aurora.edu> Subject: Cheap CW filter I have seen some discussion concerning receiver selectivity and thought I would throw this out for comment. A cheap and easy way to increase selectivity, audio-wise, is to use a series L-C circuit in an audio stage of the receiver. This can be switched across the cathode resistor in an audio stage easily. If the cathode resistor is bypassed with a capacitor, which is usually the case (especially in the power output stage), the cap must be switched out when the L-C circuit is switched in. What I have used in the past is one of the common (used to be common anyway) 88mh toroids popular with the RTTY folks. That in series with about .75uf makes the circuit makes it resonant around 700 Hz. Yer right, of course, but, except when I was heavy into traffic handling, I hardly ever used vy narrow selectivity since usually the CW tone chosen by the manufacturer was too darned high for my liking. Usually, I avoid situations where the QRM is heavy....Hmmm...do remember nearly starting an international "incident" when I told a bunch of Cuban army stations sitting smack on top of 3560 kHz (RN7 net freq) to "get *******" in Spanish. It seemed to me at the time that they were purposely QRMing us. In any case, the CW really flew back and forth there for a few minutes. Didn't hear them after that. I was running a pair of 813s at the time. 73, Ken W7EKB

For aluminum, you should first wash it with vinegar to break the oxide coating a bit, then prime it with zinc chromate (kind of a chartreuse color). Can't really advise you on the paint. I use spray enamel from the local hardware store since I don't know where to get wrinkle paint anymore. Then I bake it in wife's oven at about 150 degrees for several hours....when she lets me. There was an article in Hints and Kinks a few years ago about building a "baker" out of an old refrigerator with a hot plate at the bottom. Ken W7EKB
