I have the original article, from 1946. (The Most Inexpensive
Transmitter - by Byron Goodman W1DX, QST, Dec, 1946)
In this original oscillator, which is identical to the John Ruskin
Special, every bit of the construction is identical, except for
the use of plastic-covered wire and tiny details.
The Goodman schematic shows heater leads 2 and 7 as leads which
are drawn crossing over, but not connecting to the B- common
connection. These heater leads become part of a simple power
harness, along with a B+ lead and B- lead. All 4 wires are
bundled, tied with string, and wired to an octal plug salvaged
from a tube.
In the Goodman schematic, the common B- connection is shown
connected through a .01uF capacitor to the common B+ connection.
The screen (pin 4) and plate tuning tank also connect to the B+
common. Plate (pin 3) connects to the other end of the tank
circuit. The crystal is connected from control grid (pin 5) to
cathode (pin 8). The RF choke is connected from (pin 5), then
in series with a 100K/1W resistor. The other end of the resistor
connects to the B- common. The cathode tuned circuit is connected at
one end to (pin 8) and at the other end to a key lead connection. The
second key lead connection is to B-. Another .01uF capacitor is
connected across the key leads (from the cathode tuned circuit key lead
end to B-).
In the Goodman version of this oscillator, heater connections 2 and 7
are only connected to the 6.3 VAC winding of the power trafo through
the power harness and plug. No ground connections or commons
for the heater in this oscillator.
I built this transmitter using the wooden chassis, with a companion
power supply on another wooden chassis, but used a slightly
different oscillator circuit which eliminated the need for the
cathode tuned circuit (Fred Sutter, QSL Forty). The coils are
the Goodman ones, as described in the John Ruskin Special.
The power harness is as in the Goodman transmitter (Pins 2 and 7 connect
only through harness wires to power plug). Used the #18 plastic-covered
wire throughout, as my bell wire substitute.
Works great into my 15 Watt light bulb, as dummy load, with 355 VDC
(key down) delivered to both the plate and the screen. Colorburst
crystal handles the current fine. Sounds great on my Heathkit
HR-10B receiver.

Subject: Field Day and the GRC-109...
Unfortunately, we were "coerced" into fulfilling business and family
commitments yesterday so missed most of FD. BUT...when we went to our
friend's birthday party, I managed to get the GN-58 and GRC-109 into the
car before we left. Talked some well-oiled birthday party patrons into
cranking the GN-58 long enough to make a contact or two on 20, and several
on 40. Antenna was some electric fence wire rolled out and slung between
a basket-ball hoop and an old swing set about 60 feet apart and about 10
feet high. Took all of 10 minutes to set up the station and get on the
air.
Weren't a lot of signals, but what were there sounded good.
Then, this afternoon about 2200, worked ON9CFN on 14030 with the GRC-109.
Great fun. Any other 109s out there?

this site, but for those who don't here it is:

This site appears to have the greatest collection of manuals, schematics,
SAMS', etc., I have ever seen gathered in one place, and their prices
don't seem to be to be out of line.
I printed off their list of manuals for letters E through H and it ran to
12 pages. Includes EH Scott SLR-12A, 12B, F, and H, 3.5 pages of
Hallicrafters stuff including the HT-9, 4 pages of Heath stuff, 1.5 pages
of Hammerlund, 1 pages of Gonset, etc.
Take a look.
