Hi!
Just a quick note--had the "Jones" 6L6/TVI rig on the air again last
night. Tried tuning it up into a 50R dummy and it loaded to 60mA; so I
drug out the old SPC/Ultimate homebrew Transmatch and used it betwixt rig
and antenna. This gadget's got fair harmonic/spur suppression, with a
split-stator output condenser in the nominal T network that provides some
shunt capacity lacking in a standard T-net.
Anyhow, the neighbors didn't call or come beat on the window, so it
must have helped some. Worked VE3XQ in Ontario on 7050kc right off the
mark! Nobody else after, but it's something anyway. :)
The SPC/Ultimate is a great big clumsy thing (and yet, somehow, I used
close-spaced variable condensers when building it way back when)--still
finishing up the Z-match, for which I have high hopes. But in the
meantime, I'll keep me on the air!
Also have a new transmitter with "modern" pi-net output &c in the
works--giving serious thought to slapping in a 6J5 Pierce osc and having a
real MOPA job; dunno what kind of xtal current they run, though.
Didn't hear any BAers that I recognized, but didn't have a lot of time;
hope to have it back on tonight, as I've got to come back in to work at
12:00A EST and there's no time for a nap.

Folks,
I posted this message last week but I am posting it again since I've been having
problems receiving messages from Glowbugs. The problems seem to be fixed now.
I picked up a National MB-150 a couple of weeks ago from W.J. Ford Surplus and
plan to use it as the tank circuit for a single ended 150W amplifier using an
812 or HF-100 triode. Has anyone had any experience with this tank circuit?
According to the ad in the 1950 ARRL H'book, it is supposed to tune from 80-10
meters without coil changes and can handle 1500V.

Subject: Fishing boat problem
Seasons greetings (summer, that is).
Hasn't been anything much on here since June 23, so I thought that
maybe you wouldn't mind something slightly off-topic but still needing
home-brew skills. My son runs a 43 ton head boat (fishing party) out
of Ocean City, MD. People pay him to take them where the fish are.
This is usually around sunken wrecks on the otherwise featureless plain
of the bottom. He uses GPS (and Loran) to locate the wrecks, once he's
found them. The problem is that some people bring hand-held GPS units
abouard and get the coordinates of the fishing spots. These can be
sold to other less successful fishing boat captains, which can make a
spot too crowded to fish.
I heard about this over a year ago, and then nothing, so I thought the
problem had gone away. Went out on the boat with him last week, and
he is still looking for an effective and legal way to prevent hand-held
GPS receivers from obtaining the coordinates of a site.
It seems to me that a pulse strong enough to make the hand-held lose
lock could be delivered at ten minute intervals, as the portables
require about 15 minutes to sync up and give a position. The boat's
receiver can lock in a minute. There usually isn't anyone around, and
you are 20 miles out from land. The boat has plenty of electrical
power. So the question is, is it possible to disable portable GPS on
a boat without bothering anyone else?
Yes, you can require the passengers to leave the GPS behind, but the
kind of person who would do this can easily hide the unit.

It would take a stout pulse, as the GPS is inherently spread-spectrum. I
don't know what the legal aspects of this would be, particularly if the
jamming technique used had the possibility of interfering with someone
else's potentially critical use of the GPS.

Yeah, it would be better for him just to prohibit GPSs on board.
Wonder if you can detect the presence of GPS receivers by e.g. local
oscillator radiation?

Gang,
The handheld GPS receivers I have used were able to lock up
in a mater of seconds. It all depends on how many satellites
are in range when you turn it on. If I remember correctly it
needed three satellites in order to get a fix. More satellites
gave better accuracy.
Besides being illegal, I don't think he will be able to jam
their GPS receivers without messing up his own unit.
