Now, since I have the panel off, a bit of touch up on it, and repaint on the cabinet. (I got the matching paint), and it will be ready for the spot I have designated on the operating table. Just in time for cold winter nights on 160 and 80 M CW! Sent at 15:41:41 on 08-Nov-97 _ _ _ _ _ ___ John L. "Rock" Rockey, W9SCH. This is an original 1996 publication, not a reprint and combines a bit of history, theory of radio frequency detection, and both firebottle and (brace yourself) FET regen projects (sand-state version of the classic 1930 Doerle, for instance). Lots or practical hints and ways to replicate vintage parts using modern equivalents. A neat book, and affordably priced by Lindsay Publications, Box 12, Bradley IL 60915-0012. 73 Bob W9RAN

I built it in September, and it worked great. The only thing was the power out pot was a bit underrated. No big deal. Today, I received a package from Vintage radio...with a new 5W pot in it. I didn't request it or even mention it. Now THAT is customer service! BTW, this kind of service has been the rule in all (except 1) dealings I have had with QRP kit suppliers. I just got a couple of small parts from OHR that were missing in my OHR100 kit...2 days after I emailed them! Guys, you ARE appreciated! You provide a great service and a LOT of fun! _ _ _ _ _ ___ John L. This afternoon, after raking the leaves, I decided to peak up my regen, which I didn't think was acting too good. It is a Hartley circuit with screen grid pot for regen control. I was going to experiment with various values of grid leak R/C to see if I could improve anything. I had the phones on, and when I clipped a test lead to the grid of the tube I about fell off the shop stool. The howl resulting from adding this clip lead was SO LOUD that my head swam and it took me several seconds to realize I had to get the phones off. I was actually dizzy, it was so loud! It took probably 20 minutes before my hearing returned to normal. The next thing I did was to add a clipper across the headphone jack. This is nothing more than a pair of sil rectifier diodes wired in parallel with opposing ends connected. This clips the audio to somewhere about 1.2V P-P. Not enough to fuzz up normal audio but will sure prevent unwanted loud sounds. Telephone handsets have them and it is sure a simple way to get ear protection. UFO's are real!
