I haven't had a chance to do any more with it other than the "quickie" test I did last Sunday just to see if I could see if I could get it to kick into oscillation reliably when keyed. My experience had been that most times it wouldn't start up. What got me wondering was one time when I was reaching over the top of the rig for something when I keyed it and it started up. I took my hand away and keyed it........nothing. I then keyed it and while holding the key down and waved my hand over it. It suddenly started. So here is the basic recap for those who didn't catch it: The rig - My basic shunt-fed Hartley for 160M. 3 inch dia. coil of #14 insulated wire wound on PVC pipe. Antenna coil on the same form with 1.5" coupling. 400pf variable series tuning the ant coil. Grid cap is 250pf and grid resistor is 12k. Coil is center tapped. 2.5mH choke from B+ to plate. 300pf 2.5kv mica cap coupling plate to coil. Normally run with a 6SN7 at 2.5 watts output. I spliced a socket for the 811A into the circuit. I then made a cap of about 12pf out of double-sided pc board. It's about .75X.75" square with a lead soldered to each side. The cap is placed between the grid and plate. I put 420v on the plate and used a 6 amp 6.3v dc supply to light the filament (811A draws 4 amps). Rig is keyed by pulling the neg side of the filament to B-. Started up every time I keyed it. Draws about 50ma. End of test. I didn't adjust anything in the circuit. The coil tap is fixed so I didn't want to mess with that and I didn't play with the value of the grid resistor. The plate to grid cap may not be optimum either. That value just happened to work. Maybe the thing works differently in a shunt-fed rig than it does in a series-fed one. I don't happen to have a series fed one to test it in (Bob?) When I put together the 80 meter rig I'll make all those adjustments and see what I end up with. Hopefully it will make a usable rig. I won't have time to fool with it anymore this week so if someone gets a chance to play with idea please let us know what you find. 73 Eric KA1YRV

Well, I heard 5TVW 599, armchair, and managed a few folks down on 3525. At 0600 or a little after, I did hear a weak one that probably was a west of the big muddy type, but too weak to copy. I did run into a fellow apparently recovering from a stroke (age 65) that was interesting copy. Kudos to him for hanging in there during recovery. Alas, Ol' BA Bob folded at 0630, after calling a few rounds more and nil return. > I did hear Sandy last night, about the time you called him. I was not running big power, maybe 100 watts output from the SRT-14 into a N/S propagating antenna. I was getting up to 4 amps current into the L network, but dunno how much was going out the antenna circuit, and how much was looping in the L network. I was able to work 5TVW on 10 watts, quite well, though, but not too much above the noise at that power level. > Ken If possible, I prefer 0500Z and 0600Z for any west coast transcons attempts. I can hang in until 0700Z sometimes, but that is pushing me on weeknites. On weekends, if there is activity, I will keep a mud pot on and dittle until 0700Z. I have compared the R-388, the RAL, and the Twinnie Tuber regen against the kenwoodiewhooie (TS-140S), and aside from the bells and whistles, everything I can hear on the kenwoodiewhooie, I can hear on any of the others on 80 and 160M. So, on 80M, almost anything can make a good usable receiver. Whomever the weak one was at 0600 or so, 'fess up now, ..... you were barely heard, but you WERE heard back in NC. Bob/NA4G

I heard you last night (Monday) at 0545. You were sending quite slowly and in QSO with another station who must have been using a TV rock as he was almost smack in the middle of the TV QRM. It wasn't Sandy. I heard him earlier at about S7. Your signal sure sounded good. I called you a couple of times, but was near zero with your frequency so I doubt you would hear me. > > I have compared the R-388, the RAL, and the Twinnie Tuber regen against > the kenwoodiewhooie (TS-140S), and aside from the bells and whistles, > everything I can hear on the kenwoodiewhooie, I can hear on any of the > others on 80 and 160M. I have a Heath HP-23-A power supply that, I believe, will provide 6.3 VAC for the filament and about 600-700 volts for the plate. I am planning to put it on a lightly stained piece of Oak that will be polyurethaned after staining. I will probably use a piece of aluminum for the front plate (unless that runs against the grain of the Hartley mystic!). Anyhoooo, I am really anxious to put one together. I've heard that they are "Channel-Masters" and that, in order to maintain peace among the neighbors and their favorite TV programs, I will have to operate late, late at night. Let me know if that is your experience with Hartleys. Rod, N5HV w5hvv@aeneas.net

(2) Does anyone know the voltage and current rating of the +HV? (3) Does anyone know the voltage and current rating of the +LV?
