INTRODUCTION
1. The monthly 19 Set Net was held at its regular time of 2000Z
on 3760 KHz (LSB) on 7 Dec 97 (first Sunday of the month). There were
13 check-ins (VA3ORP-Dave, VE3ORP-Ron, VE3DPC-Frank, VE3RIH- Alan,
VE3CBK-Chris, VE3FYR-Fred, VE3POS-John, W1NU-Vic, VE3NKK- Dave,
WF2U-Meir, VE3CFY-Bill, VE3AZA-Chuck, VE3FKQ-Frank).
DISCUSSION
2. Correspondence/Visits. There have been a number of EMail
messages between VA3ORP and IK0MOZ reference a trans-Atlantic 19 Set
sked. Details below.
3. Previous Events.
a. 11 Nov - The Remembrance Day sked organized by VE1NU-
Reed, was very successful. Six contacts were made with the
furthest station being VE3BDB-Bob in Orillia. Unfortunately
Reed was using a modern set to receive so his contact with
VE3BDB (who was using a 19 Set for Tx and RX), cannot count
towards the longest 19 Set QSO recognition.
b. 16 Nov - The Ottawa Militaria Show had little communications
equipment on display - only a
Type D Mk V field phone. It was a good opportunity for VE3CBK, VE3ORP
& VA3ORP to have an eyeball QSO.
4. Upcoming Events.
a. 13, 20 & 27 Dec - Trans-Atlantic Sked. This is being
organized between the "19 Set Group" and the Italian "Army
rig Operators Club"s. Procedures will be as outlined in
"PROCEDURES - 19 SET GROUP - CW NET (ver 2.2, 11 Sep 97)".
Additional details are as follows:
Time/Freq: 0500-0530Z on 7005 KHz
0530-0600Z on 3705 KHz
Net Control: VA3ORP (Dave, 20 Km NE of Kingston)
Mode: A1 (CW) at 12 WPM
North American stations will be called in beginning at
0445Z. Trans-Atlantic work to start at 0500Z. Net Control
Station will be using modern equipment with 100 watts and
both vertical and horizontal antennae available. NOTE: THIS
IS A DIRECTED NET! Participating station to be on time and
on frequency. Priority will be given to 19 Sets as the
objective of this sked is to complete a trans-atlantic 19
Set/19 Set QSO. Propagation should be good for the 13th and
27th but is forecast to be very noisy on the 20th.
b. 17 Dec - There will be a small display of vintage
computers at the Military Communications and
Electronics Museum. This is in conjunction with a
commercial display. Hard to think of 20 year old gear
as being vintage! (do you remember CP/M? - it was BD;
that is - Before DOS)
5. Members' Activities
a. VA3ORP/VE3RCS. The 19 Set in the Museum is now
operational and available for use on Thursdays. The
Thursday sked amongst VE3RCS, VE3RIH & VE3FYR has been
named the "Old Sweats Net". Any military folks are welcome
to drop in at 1000 EST, 3760 KHz (alternate 7060 KHz). Some
additional information was found concerning the
"Alexanderson Alternator" (see the HMCS Haida web page link below)
b. VE3ORP. Waiting for the fleamarket season to start up
again. Some old gear is showing up on Sunday Night Swap Net
(details of an AR-88 passed to WF2U). Had some details
concerning a REALLY BIG antenna problem (Omega antenna in
Hawaii).
c. VE3DPC. Frank has a Command Set (both tx & rx) in good
condition but needs some tubes for the receiver.
d. VE3RIH. Alan continues to do a lot of operating with
his 19 Set. Claims to be the only "authentic" set on the
air as he runs off of battery and dynamotor! (bet his
sulfuric acid isn't 50 years old!) Alan is available for
all three trans-Atlantic skeds.
e. VE3CBK. Chris is available for all three trans-Atlantic skeds.
f. VE3FYR. Enjoys listening to the comments about the
vintage sets. The closest Fred actually got to military
radios was the PTT switch in a Hurricane fighter during
WWII.
g. VE3POS. Relayed the story of his first purchase of a
19 Set from Hercules Sales in Toronto for $48 (THAT was some
time ago!)
h. W1NU. Vic gave a run down on the modifications that he
has done to his 19 Set over the years. He checked his log
book and confirmed that he has been using that set since
1947 when he bought it, in new condition, for $1.00. Vic is
available for all three trans-Atlantic skeds. (LATE ENTRY:
On 8 Dec 97, Vic worked a station in Denmark on 80 M using
his 19 Set! Well done Vic).
i. VE3NKK. Dave needs some info on the W.S. No. 29 "B
Set". VA3ORP will check the Museum archive.
j. WF2U. Meir got another 19 Set in very good condition
and with most of the accessories. He will try to have it on
the air for the 8 Dec 97 CW Net (how much was the shipping
from British Columbia?) Still looking for information on
the RCAF AT-12 (will send photo to VA3ORP).
k. VE3CFY. Greetings from Bill. Glad to hear you on the
CW net from time-to-time.
l. VE3AZA. Had some interesting comments about using a
spark transmitter at King Edward Collegiate (Vancouver?) in
1939. May check-in to the CW net with one of his 6L6 home
brew transmitters.
k. VE3FKQ. Hopes to get to the Museum for a tour of the
back room. Maybe Frank can help identify some of the
foreign military sets.
6. Ongoing Projects:
a. 19 Set Web Page. This just keeps getting better!
Great work by VE3BDB - Bob. Lots of check-ins from all over
the world. Some "Wants" and "For Sale" items listed.
b. CW Net. Going well and the training seems to be paying
off. Participants are asked to use their dummy load for
frequency spotting or, better yet, zero beat using the
proper procedure! (set to "R/T", "Net" switch ON, adjust for
zero beat, return to "W/T"). As propagation changes it may
be necessary to move to the "blue" frequency (7033 KHz).
ADJOURNMENT
7. The net adjourned at 2157Z. QRX Sunday, 4th January 1998 at
2000Z on 3760 KHz (alternate frequency 7060 KHz).

Monthly 19 Set Net
Join us on regular lower sideband at 2000Z on 3760 KHz (+/-) on the
first Sunday of each month to chat about 19s and other older military
radio gear. Control station: VA3ORP
Weekly 19 Set Net
Each Monday night, 2330Z (1930 EDST) on 3703 KHz, CW operation. Fun
stuff. You don't need a 19 Set to participate but you may hear the
distinctive "warbling chirp". Note: this a directed net and the
control station directs ALL activity; CW speed is to be kept at 10 WPM
with correct spacing; if using a 19 Set, please re-tune often in order
to stay on frequency (digital receiver for side tone and frequency
control essential). Control station VA3ORP.
Watch Amateur Radio Packet for messages to "19_Set" after each monthly
net!

Good evening Jack, I hope you had a safe and reflective holiday. I got
a good line on the spline/bristol allen type wrenches. Yes, I am using
a good 10 CT htr.xfmer. Actually Jack, I have two projects on the work
bench. One is the restoration of my very oun ART-13 T-47 transmitter.
It also uses an 813 in the final. While looking up a good screen keying
circuit for use at a cw speed in excess of 25 wpm) I found the ideal
circuit for our One lung BIG Puffer. The artical is in both the 12th,
(pg.13) and 17th, (pg.404) edition of The Radio Engineers Handbook.
This is the right stuff and if you (can secretly hard rock christmas
candy state the the two diodes), it uses only two tubes. A 12AU7 and a
6K6. This is excluding the 6AX5-GT and the 5Y3-GT in the power supply.
The reason I mention both (the same) circuit sources is because the
explaination in the first one is extreamly definitive. You will
enjoying the literal unfolding of the circuit logic. The trade off is
you sacrafice the royally arching relay he he. And you get an
additional negative switched bias voltage with the micro-second
sequential timing advance/delay built right in. It's a natural if we
use grid block keying in let say, a buffer. Yes, I know our RCA 813
Puffers is but one tube. But you can run a lead up to the control grid
to the RF amplifier stage in a Receiver. Even a Re-Genny. I just
noticed, you also get a pretty stable +375 vdc for the receiver. What a
blast from the past. One question not answered in your last post.
What is your Screen voltage during key-up and key-down? I am putting up
four 80/40 element delta loops pointed your way, but thats another (the
antenna) story. You too. Be careful in there. I surly don't wish to
get any last comments from a crispy crittered Black Jack. E-mail me if
