You can get these in 20 and 10 ft lengths pretty cheap. They need to be guyed, but I think in the long run you will be happier than with the telescoping poles. You might also do an e-bay search on mast. There are a couple of guys there who sell surplus 4 ft long fiberglass or aluminum mast sections that have one end swaged so that they fit into each other. They run about $4-$5 a 4 ft section. Let us know what you decide. - Dr. Megacycle KK6MC/5 ______________________ James R. This program is a cooperative effort developed by a number of CW net managers throughout the United States. It is intended to provide an alternative public service network geared to low-power, portable, and mobile stations. At the present time, there are numerous High Frequency SSB nets geared to regional or special purpose communications functions. While these nets do an excellent job and are to be commended, access to these communications circuits often proves difficult for low power or portable stations (i.e. QRP, etc.), particularly when propagation conditions are less than optimal. Because CW provides significantly more reliability for stations operating at low power levels (QRP) or with compromise antennas, this will be a "CW based" program. Through NREN, one can....... * Originate routine messages to locations throughout the United States and Canada. These messages may be refiled to existing NTS circuits, or, in the case of time sensitive messages, may be delivered via Internet or other public telecommunications resource as requested by the originator. * Originate priority or emergency traffic when scheduled nets are not in session or when one is located in an area where there is no viable ARES group or similar public service program (rural areas, etc.). * Facilitate coordination or the establishment of point-to-point circuits between distant locations in time or emergency, such as a circuit linking one or more ARES or NTS Nets. NREN is not intended as a substitute for existing NTS or ARES nets. However, there are many occasions when communications must be established when these nets are not in session. In addition, the time sensitive nature of some public service traffic is such that the usual cycle of NTS nets may occasionally need to be bypassed. NREN works on the time-tested principle of a "radio watch." NREN member stations throughout North America maintain a watch on one or more of three selected frequencies. These frequencies, located in the 40, 30, and 20 Meter bands have been selected after a two month study of general Amateur Radio activity. In order to originate a message, all one has to do is call "NREN" and list traffic for subsequent routing and delivery. The traffic will then be routed to the appropriate NTS network or delivered directly as required by an NREN operator. A complete description of NREN, along with a file containing the NREN Standard Operating Procedures is available at: www.aa8vs.org/nren/ It is our hope that this program will provide an excellent alternative for stations with an interest in effective, reliable, public service and emergency communications. First, many public libraries carry QST. And let's not forget the internet. These days, the internet is the first place to look for information on a topic of interest to you. A good web presence (which the ARRL has) is arguably more valuable than exposure on newsstands and in bookstores. Even better is an elmer. After all, how does one usually learn about ham radio? Obviously, there were some places we haven't mentioned because they got there via "unconventional means". There are still some that remain to be distributed. If someone has a precise destination in mind, and a means of getting them there, then we would be pleased to discuss it. Obviously, we are keen to get radios to countries where ordinary post is unlikely to reach the destination without going missing. One place we can mention where they have done a lot of good (and which has material "on-line") is Romania. You can read about this on Gloria G3VUN's website http://www.networkgloria.org.uk/ - click on Projects/Norcal. There are kids using these radios that would otherwise not have access to Amateur Radio. I also reported about other destinations in a QRPp article in a while back. Norcal/AmQRP have also had initiatives where you buy one and give to a kid. Do we really need to know which kids got them? I don't see why but the choice is clear. If folk don't want to support these schemes then they don't have to, but many people have had a lot of fun and learned something on the way with kits that really aren't that expensive - so where's the harm? Doug is doing what he does best. Drumming up a bit of excitement in the hobby. So before we knock him we should maybe ask what we have done for QRP lately. Kind regards Tony - G4WIF ----- Original Message ----- Then I forgot the lesson and fell for the NC 20 hype -- you know, pay double for the kit (design flaws included) and we'll send freebies to someplace else (but don't ask for details/results). > > The humble club projects of 10 years ago appear to have evolved into a quasi-commercial operation. And this is fine - no problem! Without this network, we wouldn't have a lot of useful QRP related gadgets! BUT, lets treat it as such. Sales have kept so me busy putting together the regen kits together that I have not found time to put the finishing touches on the crystal radio kit. I had hoped to have it ready by now. It's very close...maybe in a week, I'll have a few to sell. This kit is a lot of fun too...a great little kit inspired by the old Heathkit, but updated and housed in an even smaller enclosure. Other projects are coming along. I have a couple of shortwave designs that work quite well--just about to decide which one to use. And I am zeroing in on a couple of ham projects. Please no jokes about over hype. These kits will be very modest and great for beginners. All ElmerRadio kits are designed to be a major step BELOW what is available now. These are absolute beginner kits, but it is quite amazing how many "old" guys are buying and building them. Look for my add in the next issue of the Homebrewer. I ran a rough evaluation on EZNEC and find the patterns rather interesting. For 20m I kept the loop closed and note the dipole type lobe pattern broadside and for 40m opened it at the top and found a somewhat dipole pattern endfire 40m---2.7 dB at 25 degree angle 40m---with apex closed pattern is high lobe (NVIS) 20m---5.7 dB at 45 degree angle There is almost 2 S-unit reduction 90 degrees to the lobes making it fairly directional. QUESTION: I note that they feed it with coax and wondering if anyone has modified the loop to feed it with balanced line? QUESTION 2: Has anyone added a stub to the apex to be open on 40 and closed on 20m+?? QUESTION 3: Has anyone using the DK9SQ 40-10m loop experienced these predicted results in actual use? I uploaded an article on how to build it at: http://www.jasonhsu.com/ee.html The advantages of my SWR/wattmeter instrument over the other designs out there: 1. Both QRO and QRP capability: 200mW to over 100W! This is the best of both worlds! 2. LED displays instead of tiny, confusing cross-needle meters 3. Better accuracy at QRP power levels, due to the diode drop loss compensation 4. Better resolution at high SWR levels, even SWR levels above 5! 5. No calibration needed! Admittedly, there is no QROP Meter kit available, so you'll have to order 1N34A diodes, FT82-43 toroids, and other parts only available by mail order or the Internet. However, you also have flexibility. For example, you can build your QROP Meter with SO-239s and not be stuck with the BNCs that are incompatible Yaesu/Icom/Kenwood products and most of the antennas on the market. (I may be flamed for this, but I prefer SO-239s and PL-259s for HF. It's the established standard, and if everyone stuck with the established standard, you wouldn't need adapters or several different sets of coax. And on HF, feedline and connector losses are low. I also prefer to use Radio Shack DC connectors instead of PowerPoles. All Radio Shack DC power connectors and accessories are available at Radio Shack. Power Pole accessories are MUCH less widely available.) Our group's recent discussion on BPL inspired me to write the following column for our readers, many of whom aren't involved with Amateur Radio but do have an interest in minimizing EMI: http://www.reed-electronics.com/tmworld/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA331930&stt=000&pubdate=11%2F1%2F2003§ion=Departments&subsection=Viewpoint 73-- Brad AA1IP ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 14:12:52 -0800 From: John Rollins To: qrp-l@lehigh.edu Subject: [160646] Re: Bands Message-ID: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" >According to www.spaceweather.com, there was an X-11 class flare at 1950 UTC. The blast saturated X-ray detectors onboard GOES satellites. The last time that happened in 2001, the flare was classified as an X20--the biggest ever. X-ray Solar Flares 6-hr max: X20 1950 UT Nov04 24-hr: X20 1950 UT Nov04 While many bill be focused on bad things for HF operation, remember that for 6 and 2 meters (and maybe 222), this may be another WAY-COOL OPPORTUNITY for great Aurora! Bottom Line: If HF is dead, got on 6M and have some great fun! 72, Mark K2QO ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 17:04:50 -0500 From: "Mike Yetsko" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: [160648] Launching Lines... We all ride the lift and when it stops, we have to get down without it restarting or moving. Basically, they throw a line over the main cable, then raise a chair to lower people down. The ski patrol had a nifty tool to put the line over the cable. Now, if you're not a skier, you may not realize there's a BUNCH of cables up there. And usually the cable you need to get over is the 'last' one of a group, and there will other cables nearby. In the past, one the ski patrol used to climb each tower and they drop a rope over the cable then slide it to the chairs. But what they used this year was a like a 'mace' or a 'battle hammer'. It was a softball duck-taped to the end of a dowel. The dowel was about 1-1/4" diameter and about 20" long. The softball had two pieces of tape on it, so that it appeared as an 'X' when viewed 'end on'. When the tape went down the shaft of the dowel, it was then wrapped with more tape. The other end of the dowel had a screw in 'eye' for attaching a rope. I know, sounds stupidly simple. But with just a LITTLE practice, it was easy to get the thing over the CORRECT cable at up to 50 feet in the air. As has been made pretty common knowledge, these things fake originators. So posting messages like "I got a virus from N5OBC," really means nothing.
