That transistor ought to be able to pull down to 0.1 volts above ground or less when saturated. Maybe you have a component failure somewhere. I just finished building KX1 serial number 78 along with all the options (KXB30, KXAT1 & KXPD1) and am happy to report that everything went very smooth. I have built a K1 and a K2 and am very pleased with the KX1. I am in the process of climbing the 54 mountains in Colorado that are taller than 14,000 ft and I am really looking forward to taking the KX1 into the back country with me. I've climbed 30 of the 54 14'ers and will be hard at it again next summer. Wow, Victoria sure did a good job getting all those parts counted and put into the kit for me. Not a single thing missing. THANKS VICTORIA!! By the way, about 2 weeks ago my wife said "I don't know what we are going to get you for your birthday"... I said, no problem, I've got it taken care of and about 3 days later the KX1 arrived!! I'll be looking for contact #1 tonight on 40 meters. In my opinion, a very nice addition to my collection. See you next summer from my tent in the Colorado Rockies! 73 Tom N0DSP Bailey, CO _________________________________________________________________ Frustrated with dial-up? There are several low cost alternatives to e-bay. Look at used test equipment dealers, hamfests, surplus sales from corporations, and other test equipment auctions. How does HP in Ft. Collins dispose of their surplus test gear? You might find a good value there. If you can try before you buy, so much the better. If you have the space on the workbench and the back strength, the 5XX series are good-cheap scopes for HF use. I bought a 585 (85 MHz) for $12 at a test equipment auction that works great. The 545 and 547 (40 MHz?) are probably better utility scopes and perfectly fine for HF. At that price, you can buy another one when they die. But, they are repairable as there is lots of room in there to work and many parts are still available. If something big goes bad, there are lots of great parts in there to cannabilize and that old CRT makes a great lamp. :^)=. Many of the old Tek scopes are being bought only for the tubes by the Japanese audiophiles and silver content by the recyclers. Real sad end for these once grand instruments. The HPs are usually priced lower than the Tektronix scopes, but are just as good. For some reason they don't have the attraction that Tek does. If you get into the TEK 76XX series, there are rabid collectors of the rarer plug ins and you compete with these fanatics for some of the more useful ones. I don't think that there are any HP fanatics to compete with, hence the lower price. But it is still great gear. - Dr. Megacycle KK6MC/5 ______________________ James R. While the screen is smaller it has a sharper and smaller trace too. And the horizontal locking is superior to any other series of tek scopes, all of which makes up for the smaller display. Make sure you get one with low hours and a smooth running rear exhaust fan, and I am sure you will be pleased. They are older than the 46x series and therefore are usually less expensive if you can find a good one. I have had one as my main scope here for about 25 years and it was well used when I got mine. Still running and working well. BTW I also have a 475 that is in outstanding shape, but as long as the 453 is running, the 475 just sits unused. The challenge with eBay is that is does take a lot of attention. Quite often the price of something will get bid way up in the last few minutes, and you don't want to get suckered into going higher than your plan when that happens. There are a LOT of nice scopes on eBay, so it's not such a big deal to loose the bid. Just be persistent. Also, keep an eye on the completed auctions to see what the actual prices ended up at. You will see quite a range, which will help you understand what it will take to land the scope you want. But be sure to read the fine print on the low priced ones ... not all are in perfect shape. I probably lost 50 bids before I came up with my scope, but I'm tickled to death with the thing. It does take some time. I probably spent a half hour to an hour an evening for 3 or 4 weeks before I came up with mine. And the luck of the Irish was with me -- turned out that a friend was heading out to where the vendor was, so I was able to avoid shipping, which is significant for something like a scope. Hamfests may be a decent place to look, but you need a big swap to have any reasonable selection, and you get to Dayton and it becomes such a zoo it's pretty tough to get something like a scope there. This time of year seems like the swaps thin out, anyway. Also, prices of anything seem to go in cycles. If it looks like this week's price is $500, put the exercise on the shelf and check back in a couple of months. Just don't let yourself get too wrapped up in the emotion of the bidding, be patient, and you will get your scope at the price you think is reasonable. 72/73 de WB8RCR http://www.qsl.net/wb8rcr didileydadidah QRP-L #1446 Code Warriors #35 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rod N0RC" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Sent: Monday, November 10, 2003 10:47 PM Subject: O'scope time? The recent WARC has decided to change the allocation of the amatuer band in Regions 1 and 3 to 7000-7200 kHz, and the SWBC stations displaced in 7100-7200 kHz will move further up. A couple of notes on this. The complete keyer kit, once assembled, can be mounted by the jacks -- they are panel mount types with threaded collars, so you can mount them to a front or rear panel. Of course you'd probably want to remote mount the pushbutton switch in that case. You can also use just the chip itself with a Zener, TO-92 regulator or whatever to feed it 5 Volts or less, and integrate it into a rig with only a couple of parts. Perf board is good for this, or I do have a few of the older prototype PCBs still around that I am including with the parts kit until they're gone. These are very small, and have the connections brought out to a row of holes instead of having the jacks and switch mounted on the board. I originally designed it to be easy to build into a rig, whether just on perf board or built in from scratch. The kit and PCB were in response to a fair number of requests I got, and have been doing pretty well. Anyway, those of you who receive QST should be seeing a lot more of it in the Deccember issue -- the information is a couple of code releases old, but I got my author's certificate the other day, so I guess it's official. Bob is "local" for me, and is totally reliable and competent. A much better source than E-Bay for a good, working scope. Bob Garcia 845 Fairfield Drive Marietta, GA 30068-2619 Tel: 1-770-977-5701 Bob is a retired Tek engineer who refurbishes and sells scopes for spending money. He also repairs scopes at remarkably good prices. A typical deal will be a 60 MHz transistorized Tek scope for about $125. Anyone who attends hamfests in the southeast will recognize Bob as "Mr Scope." The TEK 2215 is an excellent 60 MHz scope, and it probably a "little" more reliable than the 465B, mostly because it has fewer board interconnects, and more MSI devices. The 465B is a fantastic scope, but has LOT of transistors in sockets. Either from Bob would perform as new, and he stands behind his sales. I have dealt with him for years, and have NEVER heard a bad word about him. 73, Garey - K4OAH Atlanta Rod N0RC wrote: > Folks, > > I'd love to have a O'scope. At a recent club auction there was a 545 scope on the cart, with the 1L20 plugin as well as the timing plugin that went for less than 10 dollars, and another had no buyers at all - granted they are large but really do a good job, especially for the money. (HV supply fried) Couldn't wait until the next hamfest, still months away. So, I got on ebay via a friend of mine, as I don't have a credit card to open an account with. I made a bid on a 465B and of course, lost it at the last seconds of the auction. I noticed the seller looked like a dealer, so I contacted him and found out he had more of these for sale, which hadn't gone to auction yet. He was willing to sell me one for the low end of the avarage auction price, $225 if I remember right. Turns out he was fairly near by in Maine too, so shipping wasn't too bad. Of course, at the next hamfest I found a 453 parts scope for $20.00. It's HV supply wasn't compatable with the one in the 453A, but was able to take a board out of the 453A to make the 453 work, so at least now I have a spare scope:-) 72, Steve, KD1JV "Melt Solder" White Mountains of New Hampshire http://www.qsl.net/kd1jv/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 09:30:24 -0900 From: Jim Larsen To: "qrp-l@lehigh.edu" , QRP Canada , Subject: [161059] Great Alaska Ptarmigan Hunt next Sunday Message-ID: <3FB12AC0.1010302@alaska.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit We are up to 10 or 11 Ptarmigan for the Great Alaska Ptarmigan (GAP) Hunt next Sunday. It is very small and was easy to Velco in place with the Kenwood TS-50 and Yaesu 5100. I'm on 160 through 70 Cm except 6 meters now from the car. The antenna's are a screwdriver motor tuned HF antenna and a Larsen dual band VHF/UHF. They and the radios are in a Dodge Durango. I made a short coax jumper to hook in the 860 power meter and then did a little testing. The TS-50 mike has 4 switches along the bottom and these can be set up to do good things. I can change power from 100 to 50 to 5 watts, change modes from ssb to cw and more with these switches. So if driving along I decide to move from 80 to 17 meters I will press the switchs to change power to 5 watts, cw mode then tune to the 17 meter frequency, then turn on the screwdriver motor to decrease inductance until I see the the power suddenly go up on the 860 meter. Back and forth a couple times and it's set. Now I'm ready for operation on that frequency at 5 watts CW. With the switches I can change that to USB 100 watts if desired. Without touching the radio. There are also some such available on ebay all the time, usually most excellent MIL stuff. I HAVE the hex crimper, the connectors, and the cable; but the new surplus cables are impossible to beat. New, non-surplus TPI cables are ~ $9.40 for a 48" cable from Digikey. I have experience with those and they are excellent, molded RG-58 cables. The ebay surplus cables are about 1/2 that, with similar-or better-quality. Again from Digikey, prices for ONE BNC connector range from $1.50 up-and the only ones in stock that do not require crimping are the twist-ons. I have heard the twist-ons are fine connectors, but-and this is sheer prejudice since I haven't tried one in 15 years (and perhaps they are making them better/differently-I don't know and don't care.) I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole. They are ~ $1.70 each. So... you can pay ~ $3.50 (+ coax) per cable and take your chances, or you can buy new or new surplus for a bit more. Admittedly, as good as the TPI molded cables are, once I found the ebay cables, I quit buying them. If I HAD to have a cable, and none were currently available at ebay; and IF I could afford the $10, I'd get the TPIs before I'd make 'em myself. 73 Ed Tanton N4XY Ed Tanton N4XY 189 Pioneer Trail Marietta, GA 30068-3466 website: http://www.n4xy.com All emails & checked by Norton AntiVirus with AutoProtect LM: ARRL QCWA AMSAT & INDEXA; SEDXC NCDXA GACW QRP-ARCI OK-QRP QRP-L #758 K2 (FT) #00057 -------------------------------------------------- "He that gives up a little liberty to gain temporary security will lose both and deserve neither". --Benjamin Franklin "Suppose you were an idiot ... and suppose you were a member of Congress... but I repeat myself." --Mark Twain -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 18:32:17 -0500 From: "Hare,Ed, W1RFI" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: [161069] RE: O'scope time? This is the season for this strategy,, look and see if you find one of your items that might have it's bid close out at an irregular time and or date, like Noon Thanksgiving, that has helped me this time of year bag some good quality bargains. And you get peace of mind with MY method. Not as many bargains, but no wasted money trying to outbid folks. The method? Simply decide how much you ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NO MATTER WHAT would be willing to pay, and bid that. I win 90% of the auctions I bid on (99% of the [serious] grid dip meters), and when I don't, I DON'T CARE... since I know darn well the other guy not only wanted it worse than me, but had to pay more for it than I was willing to pay. I used to literally DESPISE the "snipers" Henry. (Now I just really dislike them.) But since I figured this 'method' out, like I said, I don't really care. Yes, it does practically eliminate bargains... but it also helps identify an "impulse" buy you don't really need. The one exception to this rule (which I did NOT count in that 90%) are the occasional odd items where no one is bidding on something, and it's worth something like the minimum bid + shipping. THEN and only then do you put some small bid down. If you 'steal' it fine, if you don't get it... well, you weren't really serious anyway. Finally, even if I have gotten 'milder' about 'sniping'-and understand it IS legal, but come on. You KNOW it isn't 'fair'. Or maybe the word is 'nice'. It isn't nice. Nice guys may not get bargains, but they don't always finish last either. Anytime a sniper wants some of me, they are welcome to try. Because of what a 'new' GDO means to me, I assure you they will pay significantly more than the GDO is worth to outbid me. 72/73 Ed Tanton N4XY Ed Tanton N4XY 189 Pioneer Trail Marietta, GA 30068-3466 website: http://www.n4xy.com All emails & checked by Norton AntiVirus with AutoProtect LM: ARRL QCWA AMSAT & INDEXA; SEDXC NCDXA GACW QRP-ARCI OK-QRP QRP-L #758 K2 (FT) #00057 -------------------------------------------------- "He that gives up a little liberty to gain temporary security will lose both and deserve neither". --Benjamin Franklin "Suppose you were an idiot ... and suppose you were a member of Congress... but I repeat myself." --Mark Twain -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of QRP-L Digest 3101 ************************ --------------------------------
