Given the propensity of the K2 to pick up 60 Hz hum from a too-close power supply, would the proximity of the Orion induce noise into the K2? If so, that would definitely skew the results . . . 73 de dave ab9ca John Harper AE5X wrote: > Stuart Rohre (rohre@arlut.utexas.edu) wrote: > Folks, this is one of the best reviews and head to head tests I have seen. > > The K2 comes off a lot better than another import ; although the far more > expensive Orion shines best of all. The procedure is to put a 50 ohm resistive load on the tuner output and with the 259B or similar instrument, adjust the tuner for 50+j0 input impedance. Then the load is changed to 25 ohms and the rho or RL or SWR or all of them are recorded. Then the load goes to 100 ohms and the parameters for that load are recorded. Frank then uses any or all of three formulas, using rho, RL or SWR, to calculate the tuner loss in dB. He also has formulas for calculating, from the measured values, the per cent of input power that is lost in the tuner. I won't even try to reproduce the formulas in ASCII, but the method works very well. We have tested probably a dozen or more tuners and most of them average about 0.5 dB loss on 20 meters. Some as high as about 0.8 dB and others as low as 0.2 dB. Tuner loss has been greatly exaggerated for most applications. Tuners can become a problem when trying to load short antennas where the resistive component is only a few ohms and the reactance is large and capacitive. There the voltages and currents within the tuner can become very large and arcs and melted wires can result from attempted high-power operation. Glad you finally got the Foxii to listen to you! <:} The band was great here all evening - unbelievable after the last few Hunts. 73, George W5YR ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2003 16:51:47 -0500 From: "Ron Polityka" To: ".QRP-L" Subject: [161935] All 2004 QRP Contest Calendar Shipped Message-ID: <003201c3b467$7f6baca0$0200a8c0@WB3AAL> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello, Just wanted to let everyone know that all calendars that were purchased are in the mail. Since the original posting I realized that there is actually a +5kHZ between the VFO frequency and the MFJ 9420 Dial readout ... thus with my setup the Freq-Mite was reading 5KHZ higher than the actual frequency. I suspect that the IF Frequency of the 9420 is actually 9.995MHZ not 10MHZ as the manual states, this would explain why the VFO frequency reads +5KHZ higher than expected. The solution is simply to program an offset into the Freq-Mite as follows: Adding 995 KHZ makes things right. That happens to correspond to the following jumper pattern 1111100011 J1 the 1 corresponds to a jumper in place, J1 corresponds to the J1 marking on the board. As far as connections from the Freq-Mite here is what I have done : All location references assume that you have the 9420 with the lid off and the front panel facing you. AF - I have two 100K resistors in parallel (ie 50K ohms) mounted on the Freq-mite board at the AF point and a wire coming off of this and going to the right hand side of R23 (ie junction of R23 and C40). This injects the audio just before the point where the audio is muted on TX. GND goes to one side of the SPST (normally open) mini-switch S1 goes to the other side of the switch. V+ goes to the back right hand pin on the front panel power switch RF IN goes to pin 6 on U7 (make sure that you understand the PINOUTS for the NE602 before doing this) The board itself is grounded via the screws and L bracket holding the board onto the right front metal standoff intended for mounting the add-on CW adaptor. This has now been verified on two rigs, mine and the one belonging to Ray, KA8SYX and is working very well. If anyone else is attempting this please drop me a note if you have any questions. The pictures I have seen on the web do not do justice to the ones that I have seen. The paddles have a very good feel. Some paddles I have used in the past are sloppy and have a lot of play in them, which makes it difficult to get a close contact spacing without the keyer getting stuck closed once in a while. I really hate that! These paddles seem very mechanically tight. At the meeting, Jerry had three different spring sets: soft, medium and hard. Different folks seemed to prefer different springs. I really like the hard spring as it allowed me to set the key spacing very, very close, so only a light touch was needed to key it. I don't know what the paddles are being shipped with, but there was a talk of selling a spring set for a minimal cost (springs are expensive!). Being a Az ScQRPion member, I am somewhat biased, but never-the-less, I was very impressed. - Dan Tayloe, N7VE; Phoenix, Az; Az ScQRPions ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 2003 11:12:41 -0600 From: "Ronald W. However, I can't quite understand how it fits in. Where does the original wire from the centre pin of the antenna connector (J302 in the book J303 on the schematic), attach to the new circuitry? There is some cryptic info - 'Take the antenna wire from J302 and twist another wire around it - etc. etc.'. I, sort of, believe that he's saying that the receiver input at C114 gets a 'gimmick' capacitor (using twisted insulated wire) connection to the antenna jack, and that the wire from the antenna jack then gets soldered to the relay connection point that joins TX output where C303 joins point L on the board. That doesn't sound right to me, though! Maybe, the TX output connects to the antenna connector, and the TR switch also connects to the same point with C7 of the TR Switch. The receiver then connects to C114. That makes more sense, but wasn't explained that simply! The keying line doesn't seem to have any ambiguity. Any help, clarification, or revised circuits would be appreciated. Bruce, In an ideal world, there are three types of assessments that we would have: 1. Lab performance tests - these are generally widely available, and one compilation of interest is at http://www.elecraft.com/K2_perf.htm 2. Subjective comparisons and reviews of the type posted in that article and in many other places. As you say, they provide invaluable information on what it is actually like to operate any given radio, and how experienced hams got on with the radio. By nature they are personal and subjective, and need careful evaluation, but are essential. Many of us have bought technically good products that have turned out to be much harder to use than we anticipated, and thus realised that we could not get the theoretical performance that we had expected. 3. Objective human evaluations. These can be conducted scientifically, for instance using blinded auditions, timed task assessments, structured interviews, and so on. For serious commercial equipment, such as avionics, this type of assessment can also prove invaluable. It is very expensive and very time-consuming, and I have yet to see it applied to ham radio equipment. If anyone fancies funding this, I can happily provide details of what to do and who can do it. 72, Howard.
