Most FISTS members who call CQ FISTS are looking for other FISTS members to gain points for awards. But FISTS is more than just for award chasing, it's for the promotion of CW and camaraderie among Hams. If you answer that call, more often than not you should be greeted by a friendly op who will most likely try to recruit you once he/she finds out you'r not a FISTS member. You might also get the pure "number chaser" who will thank you and move on. Very rarely you might get that old curmudgeon who will totally blow you off, but thank goodness that is a very rare occurrence. So I say life is short, answer the call and enjoy the QSO. :-) 72, oo Dan, N8IE FISTS #4985 ----- Original Message ----- From: "CHARLES CURREY" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2004 4:49 PM Subject: FISTS > I have a slightly off topic question for the group on operating. If someone is calling CQ Rhode Island and you live in California, you wouldn't answer them, so why would calling CQ FISTS, CQ 1010, CQ QRP be any different? This is my opinion, and only my opinion. As usual, your mileage may vary. { ; ^ ) 73, Dan Harriman Orange, Texas At 15:49 01/13/2004, you wrote: >I have a slightly off topic question for the group on operating. Please watch the Lists and the AmQRP/NJQRP web pages for notification when we start accepting orders. Tnx. 73, George N2APB --------------------------- Now that the holidays have passed and most are back to the daily grindstone, we thought we'd provide an update on a bunch of the club activities. Atlanticon QRP Forum 2004 - The flagship QRP weekend of the year, hosted by the NJQRP and sponsored by the AmQRP, is being held on March 26-27 at "the usual place": Holiday Inn Select in Timonium, just north of Baltimore, Maryland. Now in its sixth year, we again have a great speaker lineup for top-notch presentations all day long on Saturday, including K1SWL (75m rigs & antenna designs), N2CX (component measurement), AA0ZZ (PIC-EL project board), WB8RCR (Elmer 160), WA3WSJ (antennas & field operating), and N2APB (Micro908 for component measurement). The characteristically cool and famous "Atlanticon Kit" this year is currently being prepared for mailing to those who pre-register. It is designed by N2CX and "Mr. MeltSolder" KD1JV, who will also be a featured guest this year. Moooove stuff around on the bench to make room for this "Elsie Project" ;-) More complete information and pre-registration details are available at www.njqrp.org/atlanticon HOMEBREWER mag -- Issue #2 is at the printers (for several weeks already) and will be mailed later this month. We've seen the proofs and the new/improved quality is just wonderful. This is a super issue and I'll put the contents and HB Extra content on the website this week. Issue #3 is nearly complete and will be sent to the printer within two weeks, thus getting us back on schedule with a February mailing for that one. www.amqrp.org/homebrewer/homebrewer.html DDS Daughtercard Kits - We ran out of stock just before Christmas and re-ordered everything so we could resume shipping, which has again started. So if you have a DDS Kit on order you can expect it in your mailbox by the end of the week. www.njqrp.org/dds Islander Pad Cutters - We similarly ran out of stock recently and have been waiting for another shipment of this popular item. This is the special diamond-tipped end mill described in many magazines by Dov Rabinowitz AD0V that is great for cutting little 5mm isolated pads in copper-clad material. We have also resumed shipping of this item and those with orders can expect a package in the mail this week. www.njqrp.org/islanderpadcutter Islander Audio Amps - We still have some of these inexpensive audio amps that can be homebrewed Manhattan-style using the Pad Cutter (above). These are a great way to learn how to use the Pad Cutter and to make a simple audio amp that can be used for many purposes (especially with the PIC-EL Kit to boost its mini-speaker output if your hearing is like mine :-) Be on the lookout for this amp and construction style to be featured in the Circuit Construction section of the ARRL Handbook next year. www.njqrp.org/islanderamp PIC-EL Kits - The "Pickle Board" kit is on schedule for shipping within days, so those following the Elmer 160 course will soon be able to start the interactive lab exercises with instructor WB8RCR. Parts are being sorted and we're just awaiting the pc board delivery from the fab house. This is a very cool kit with a number of great end-uses, even if you don't follow along with the course. VFO, memory keyer, remote controller, and other projects are all possible, in addition to having a built-in PIC programmer. A "Pickle Test Program" even comes pre-programmed in the PIC contained in your kit. So many have ordered this kit that we'll be placing a list of all the pending orders onto the website this week - in this way you can check that your order has indeed been received and logged. www.amqrp.org/elmer160/board Micro908 Antenna Analyzer - We're a little slower than expected on readying this major project for shipping, but progress is being made. We'll soon be announcing the kit pricing options and will be opening up ordering for everyone. Frankly, the number of reservations received thus far have just about filled the number of kits being done in the first round. So if you haven't reserved a kit already (see website on how to do this), chances are growing slimmer that you'll be able to get a kit when it first becomes available. www.amqrp.org/kits/micro908 VE3DNL Marker Generator Kits - This kit is probably among the most useful low-cost items you can get for the shack. As mentioned the other day by KI6DS, a limited supply is still available from NorCal . but when they're gone, they're gone. www.amqrp.org/kits/ve3dnl BLT Aluminum Cases - The perfect-sized enclosure for many of your QRP projects is now separately available from NorCal and KI6DS. Doug made a special purchase of these clamshell cases -- both pre-drilled for use with the BLT tuner, and undrilled for your generic project use - and now you can get this one of these limited supply items. www.amqrp.org/kits/blt_case DISCONTINUED PRODUCTS .. I really stepped on it when I replied to your question about FISTS. I didn't mean to sound like you should never answer a call for CQ FISTS if you are not a member of FISTS. I guess that I didn't do a very good job of it. I had almost included a statement to the effect that once the CQ had not been answered, then it would probably be alright to give the guy a call. I now wish that I had included that statement. What I was trying to emphasize was that if the person was calling CQ FISTS, or whatever, give the caller a chance to be answered by who he/she was calling. Then if there is no answer, go ahead and give him a shout. Like Dan N8IE said, most FISTS members who call CQ FISTS are looking for a number or state, etc from a FISTS member. But that isn't all that FISTS is about. It's the camaraderie and furtherment of CW that is foremost. Please accept my humble attempt at an apology. 72, Dan Harriman Orange, Texas At 22:55 01/13/2004, I wrote: >Hello Chuck et al; > >I think that if someone is calling a certain factor and you are not one, >then just as you said about someone calling CQ DX, it wouldn't be >proper to answer them. Despite what you frequently hear, feeding a center fed dipole on all bands with coax is not entirely hopeless. The reason that balanced line is touted as having has lower losses than coax is that it is higher impedance, not because of its balanced construction. The loss of a transmission line goes inversely as its impedance. The higher the impedance of the transmission line, the lower the loss. So one answer is to get low loss coax. New, large diameter 50 Ohm coax is expensive. However, one can often obtain odd lengths of 75 Ohm coaxial cable from local cable companies for little or nothing. It, and other large diameter coax (also known as hardline) also appears fairly frequently at hamfests. This cable has losses as nearly as low as balanced line when clean and dry, and much better than the balanced feeder when wet and/or dirty. Consider 100 ft of cable : Cable Matched loss at 10 MHz loss with 20:1SWR 7/8in OD 75 Ohm Coax 0.1 dB app 1.3 dB 450 Ohm Window Line 0.08 dB app 1.2 dB The matched losses come from Table 1, Chapter 24 ARRL Antenna Book, 20th Edition. The losses with 20:1 SWR are from Figure 14 in Chapter 24 of the same book. The figure does not have entries for matched line loss less than 0.2 dB, so I calculated the loss with 300 ft of line and then used the slope of the line to calculate the loss for 100 feet. This is an approximation, but will not significantly impact the difference in losses. Even with very high SWR, the losses in the large diameter coax will not be significantly larger than in the balanced line. You will need a tuner with the large coax as well as the balanced line. Tuner losses cannot be ignored and may be excessive at very low antenna impedances such as an 80 M antenna used on 160 M. As an aside these losses at low impedances are exacerbated by the use of a 4:1 balun in these cases as it makes the impedance one is trying to match even lower. For half inch 50 Ohm coax such as foam dielectric RG-8; Cable Matched loss at 10 MHz loss with 20:1SWR Foam RG-8 0.4 dB 2.5 dB Which is starting to get excessive. The loses are worse for all three lines at 10 M and for smaller diameter coax such as RG-58. Cable Matched loss at 10 MHz loss with 20:1SWR foam RG-58 1.1 dB 4.5 dB which is certainly excessive. You can also mix and match lines in the same run as long as you are using a tuner. Use ladder line to the ground, then transition to coax, then back to coax. A good choke or current type 1:1 balun at the transitions should be used and have reasonably low loss. You will get a reflection at each transition, leading to a large SWR, but you will have a pretty high SWR anyway, and it will be dealt with by the tuner. A remote tuner would help. If mounted at ground level it can be easily serviced. Run balanced line from the antenna tot he tuner, then coax to the transmitter. Paralled coax used as a balanced transmission line will have the same loss as a single coax line, so there is nothing to be gained there except the omission of one balun in the system. The current flowing in each cable will be halved, but the resistance will be the same in each cable, so the current in each line, which is half of the current in a single line will be multiplied by the same resistance resulting in the same loss. No free lunch and all that. Traps are useful, but introduce their own loss. A trap has minimum loss away from its resonance frequency, so you may wish to look at the multiple band single trap dipoles that W8NX has designed and published in the Handbook, Antenna Book and Antenna Compendium. The traps are made with coax and are easily tuned if built according to instructions. Parallel dipoles are useful, but are really only effective at even harmonics. At other frequencies, current flows in both dipoles and the radiation patterns can become grotesque. We hams tend to want everything in a single entity, be it rig or antenna. Often much better performance can often be had with separate antennas for each band operated or a few multiband antennas. If one spends most of his time on one or two bands, it is effective to put ones effort into effective low loss separate antennas for these bands and to use a compromise antenna for the other bands. With band information available at the output of most modern rigs, antenna switching when switching bands can be largely transparent, particularly with an automatic antenna tuner. I hope that this is useful. - Dr. Megacycle KK6MC/5 ______________________ James R. I garbled by callsign when I first called Craig but he got my correction. Nice to hear Right Coast calls getting in the logs as it's been quite a dry spell for some of us. 72, Gary -K8KFJ- West Virginia __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
