Sincerely, Stewart Wilson ============================================================================== ============================================================================== Call for Papers SIMULATION OF ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR: FROM ANIMALS TO ANIMATS An International Conference to be held in Paris September 24-28, 1990 The object of the conference is to bring together researchers in ethology, ecology, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, robotics, and related fields so as to further our understanding of the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow animals and, potentially, robots to adapt and survive in uncertain environments. The conference will focus particularly on simulation models in order to help characterize and compare various organizational principles or architectures capable of inducing adaptive behavior in real or artificial animals. Contact among scientists from diverse disciplines should contribute to better appreciation of each other's approaches and vocabularies, to cross-fertilization of fundamental and applied research, and to defining objectives, constraints, and challenges for future work. Contributions treating any of the following topics from the perspective of adaptive behavior will receive special emphasis. Individual and collective behaviors Autonomous robots Action selection and behavioral Hierarchical and parallel organizations sequences Self organization of behavioral Conditioning, learning and induction modules Neural correlates of behavior Problem solving and planning Perception and motor control Goal directed behavior Motivation and emotion Neural networks and classifier Behavioral ontogeny systems Cognitive maps and internal Emergent structures and behaviors world models Authors are requested to send two copies (hard copy only) of a full paper to each of the Conference chairmen: Jean-Arcady MEYER Stewart WILSON Groupe de Bioinformatique The Rowland Institute for Science URA686.Ecole Normale Superieure 100 Cambridge Parkway 46 rue d'Ulm Cambridge, MA 02142 75230 Paris Cedex 05 USA France e-mail: meyer%FRULM63.bitnet@ e-mail: wilson@think.com cunyvm.cuny.edu A brief preliminary letter to one chairman indicating the intention to participate--with the tentative title of the intended paper and a list of the topics addressed--would be appreciated for planning purposes. Hunt" Subject: Travel to Bangalore The North American Section of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects issues a call for travel proposals to attend the 11th International Congress of IUSSI in Bangalore, India, on August 5-11, 1990. ELIGIBILITY: U.S.citizens and landed immigrants (with a green card or work visa) are eligible for all 50 of the grants we expect to award. Twenty-five of those awards originate from Smithsonian Institution funds, and those can be awarded regardless of citizenship or residence. AWARDS: Round-trip airline tickets from JFK Airport to Bangalore, India. Awardees must be prepared to arrange for their own transportation to New York City. We may be awarded funds from NSF to partially defray domestic travel to JFK, but this is by no means firm. REVIEW COMMITTEE: Rob Page Walter Tschinkel Mary Jane West-Eberhard SEND PROPOSALS TO: Walter Tschinkel Department of Biological Sciences Florida State University Tallahassee, FL 32306-3050 DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS: FEBRUARY 1, 1990 APPLICATION PROCEDURES: Submit a proposal including the following information: 1) statement of need; if your institution has no funds to support your travel, a statement to that effect is necessary 2) description of the applicant's role at the Congress; if invited to give an address, please included the name and organizer of the symposium 3) brief abstract of the presentation 4) brief (i.e., skeletal) curriculum vitae 5) statement on other planned scientific activity in India or another country en route 6) statement of citizenship and/or immigration status Applications should not exceed 2 pages; submit 4 copies. SELECTION CRITERIA: The Selection Committee will examine all complete applications received by February 1, 1990. Each member will rank the applications independently, and final decisions will be made by concensus of the three members. They will apply the following to arrive at their rankings: 1) need, i.e., the availability of other funds to cover travel expenses 2) priority according to the applicant's role in the congress: plenary session>invited symposium speaker>organizer of a symposium>contriubted paper, workshop or poster 3) current members of NAS/IUSSI will be given preference 4) additional scientific activity planned in India or en route will enhance the application 5) the committee will try to achieve some balance among the symposia, so that awards are spread over as many topics in social insect biology as possible 6) some special consideration will be given to "junior" applicants, i.e., students and those who have received the Ph.D. within the past 5 years AWARD NOTIFICATION: The committee will complete reviews by March 1, 1990, and will notify applicants by mail shortly thereafter; awardees will receive round-trip tickets from JFK airport to Bangalore from the American Express Company. Best wishes, Jim Hunt President, NAS/IUSSI ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 31 Jan 90 12:32:23 EST Reply-To: Discussion of Bee Biology Sender: Discussion of Bee Biology From: "Edward E.
