Evening Friends, The weather here in Baltimore is improving by the minute ! A couple years back our Tree Tribe was concerned with the question of how we could control insect pests without inflicting worse damage on our dear trees than the bugs would have done themselves. One theory emerged which utilized a widely available home-cleaning liquid called Murphy's Oil Soap. (Hey Mr. G. Wiz -- remember this one ? And again, our 'forest' in this case is urban street trees.) What we hoped was that Murphy's might be a safe, effective alter- native to the expensive 'organic' plant-soaps that one can purchase from the fancy garden centers. Eventually I called Murphy, and wrote down the following recipe, which was read to me over the phone. These notes are a few years old. They probably contain errors, and Murphy may have changed formulae by this time -- but for the curious: 1. Water 2. Tall Oil (Pine Derivative) 3. Potassium Hydroxide 4. Fragrance (Citrus - Secret) 5. Cocamidopropyl Amine Oxide 6. Hydroxysultaine 7. Triethanolamine 8. Alcohol 9. Tetra-Sodium EDTA 10. Color (Inorganic, Non-Metal Dye) And while on the subject of Organic Gardening - I'm thinking of placing a small classified in the magazine of that name, so that folks who may have e-mail, but without WWW access, can hear about our discussion list. You'll recall that OGMag is published by the eco-progressive Rodale Press. Richard@Flora.Com
