From eweigel@juno.com Wed Aug 11 18:22:32 1999 Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 14:05:14 -0700 From: Edna M Weigel To: sanet-mg@amani.ces.ncsu.edu Subject: maggots My chickens would be delighted if I could figure out how to grow maggots for them. I thought maybe one of these days, I'd get over my squimishness and try some experiments--then I read Misha's post. Maybe I'll concentrate on tomato worms, grasshoppers, soy beans, etc. instead. Then I read Riaan's post about someone growning maggots for fish food. Then Loren quoted his grandfather talking about "limberneck" in chickens and Holly reported (among other things) feeding them to chickens successfully and Cecile also reported letting her chickens eat them with no ill effects. And, now I can add a bit to the discussion; about insecticidal nematodes, ARBICO (www.usit.net.BICONET) supplies them. Most likely there are lots of other places that also sell them.) We tried them unsuccessfully for termites then later talked to a pest control expert who had successfully used them in other parts of the state but found they didn't work with our soils. I don't think we were able to keep the soil moist enough for them. I'm facinated with the wealth of ideas and information on this list! Thanks for being there... -Edna ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
