What's New This is a partial release of "A Biologist's Guide to Internet Resources" (refered to here as the Guide). Like its subject, the Internet, this Guide has developed far beyond what I imagined when I began to distribute it several years ago. To facilitate electronic distribution, it has been organized into more natural parts, and I sometimes put out versions that update only parts of the entire Guide. This is such a version, covering only mailing lists. Don't throw out Version 1.7 yet: it still has much to recommend it. The discussion of mailing lists has been re-written (again). The list of mailing lists is sorted roughly by discipline. Subscription procedures are explained via use of a key that identifies the type of software used to automate the administration of each list. Be sure to read the part of the Guide pertaining to the software before you try to subscribe to a mailing list for the first time: mistakes are common and embarrassing. -*- 1.2. Conditions of Use See Version 1.7 of the Guide for conditions of use. -*- 1.3. Acknowledgments Many alert readers have sent me notices of new mailing lists, and address changes for old ones. They will be mentioned individually in the next full release of the Guide. For now thanks, everyone! -*- 1.4. How to Get the Latest Version The Guide is released at irregular intervals. The most recent version is available via WWW, gopher, anonymous FTP and e-mail (and Usenet): - In Usenet, soon after a new release, look in sci.bio or sci.answers. - Gopher to sunsite.unc.edu, and choose this sequence of menu items: Worlds of SunSITE -- by Subject Ecology and Evolution A Biologist's Guide ... Or, from any gopher offering other biology gophers by topic, look for the menu item "Ecology and Evolution". The guide is stored there in two ways: as a file for easy retrieval and as a menu for browsing. - FTP to rtfm.mit.edu. Give the username "anonymous" and your e-mail address as the password. Use the "cd" command to go to the directory pub/usenet/news.answers/biology/guide/ and use "prompt" and "mget *" to copy all the parts of the guide to your computer. For information about how to get many other useful documents from this archive, send the message "help". You can also use anonymous FTP to sunsite.unc.edu, where this Guide, in several formats, is stored in the directory pub/academic/biology/ecology+evolution/bioguide/ - Send e-mail to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with the text send usenet/news.answers/biology/guide/* You will receive several files in reply, one for each part: save each part separately, delete the e-mail headers and footers, and merge them. -*- 1.5. Some Mind-Boggling Statistics In February of 1994, the average daily worldwide traffic carried by Usenet newsgroups topped 100 Mbytes (or 40,000 pages), and has only increased since then. Newsstats (9 April 1994) reports that during a two week period 589,088 articles were submitted from 42,518 Usenet sites by 145,665 users to 7576 newsgroups. Of those articles, 3.0% were posted to newsgroups in the sci.* hierarchy (17,309 articles, 39 Mbytes) and 0.3% were posted to the bionet.* hierarchy (1654 articles, 4 Mbytes). Usenet newsgroups carry announcements, questions and answers, advice and bits of program code, references, heated debates, and raw data. In early 1994, an estimated 8 million people read Usenet news at least occasionally. Growth since then has been so enormous that all efforts to measure it have been temporarily abandoned, but there is anecdotal evidence that the total Usenet readership is now somewhere between 20 and 30 million people. There are some 9000 worldwide Usenet newsgroups (1500 in the seven "mainstream" Usenet hierarchies, including sci.*) and about the same number of mailing lists. It appears that there are on the order of 50 thousand people who read Usenet newsgroups relating to biology and there may be that many using mailing lists for topics in biology. There are roughly 300 mailing lists that may be of particular interest to biologists. You will find most of these listed below. -*- 2. Mailing Lists An electronic mailing list is similar to the old-fashioned paper-based kind: someone keeps a list of the names and e-mail addresses (usually no more than that), either by hand or using a software package to make almost all the work automatic. The person who keeps the list is known as the "owner" or "administrator", and has the final say about anything that has to do with the list, including who may subscribe. Most mailing lists are open to anyone, and by convention anyone who is a subscriber (and often anyone else as well) can send contributions to the mailing list. Subscription methods vary, depending on the software (if any) used to administer the list, so they are discussed separately for each of the most popular software packages, below. Once you have subscribed to an electronic mailing list, you can expect to receive an e-mail copy of any item sent to the list, and if you send an article to the list, it will be automatically re-distributed to all the other subscribers. Because of this behavior, mailing lists are sometimes called "reflectors" or "exploders". Some lists are used only to distribute occasional notices by e-mail to subscribers, or the owner may edit, moderate, or merely filter the items sent to the list. In these cases, any e-mail sent to the list will be re-directed to the owner, who will decide whether to send it back to the mailing list for distribution to all subscribers. Usually, new subscribers are sent an introductory notice that gives, among other useful information, the "charter" of the mailing list (what is welcome and not welcome there), a brief note about how the mailing list is run, including any moderation policy, and instructions on how to unsubscribe. -*- 2.1. Etiquette - If possible, Bitnet users should use the Bitnet address of a list and its server; Internet users should use the Internet address. - Send your subscription request to the automated software `daemon' in charge of the list, or to the list administrator, not the list itself. - Keep a record of your subscriptions, and a copy of any instructions that you receive from the list administrator. - Remember to unsubscribe or otherwise turn off your subscriptions before your e-mail address changes or you go away on vacation. - Suppress the urge to send the same article to multiple mailing lists. - Be brief or, if your article is more than a few hundred lines long, warn your readers by putting the text "(long)" in the Subject line. - The administrator's job involves thankless hard work and skill, and is probably un-paid, so be polite and say thank you occasionally. Be careful not to send your subscription request to the list address; it will be distributed to every subscriber, none of whom can do anything to help you, other than tell you the correct address for sending your request. The first step is to figure out what the correct address is. Next, determine how to format your request. You will find the section below helpful for figuring out how to do this, plus much more that you will need to know to make the fullest use of the services offered by the mailing list administrator. It is very important that you keep a list of all mailing lists to which you are subscribed, along with the address of the list administrator and the address you used when you subscribed, if you have more than one. This is because you will need to unsubscribe yourself if you go away on vacation or your address changes. Otherwise any mail sent to you from the list may bounce or cause other, sometimes severe problems. And it's easier to check the address etc. when you want to tell friends how they can subscribe too. At the end of this section are listed those mailing lists of particular interest or use to biologists. Internet addresses are given whenever possible, and all addresses are in standard Internet format, with the exception that portions of the Internet node names that reflect original Bitnet node names are given in uppercase, for the convenience of readers on Bitnet nodes. For historical reasons, there are often two main routes between Bitnet hosts: one via Bitnet and the other via the Internet. It is helpful to be consistent in your addressing, as you must use the same route to unsubscribe to a mailing list as you used to subscribe. Mailing lists that are run via the ListServer mailing list manager (MLM) offer the feature of temporarily stopping delivery of articles to you while you aren't able to read them. It is important at times to turn off or cancel your subscriptions. If you will be unable to read your e-mail for more than a few weeks, you should stop your subscriptions so that you don't exceed your personal disk storage quota and loose any personal e-mail that is sent to you. Before your computer account is terminated (when you change jobs or graduate, or your course ends), you should permanently unsubscribe from any mailing lists. If you do not take care of this yourself, someone will have to do it for you. Don't post the same article to many mailing lists, especially if you don't subscribe to all of them. Many people subscribe to more than one list; they will be annoyed by duplicate copies of your article. If your article is interesting to them, readers will re-send it to other, relevant mailing lists that they know well, where your article will be welcome, so there is no need for you to go to the trouble yourself. Clear, concise writing is a valuable skill, and highly prized among the readers of most mailing lists. You should try to critique and edit your articles before sending them; the more care you put into them, the more your personal and professional reputation will grow. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that participation in mailing list discussions can lead to wonderful things: invitations to attend conferences and write papers for esteemed journals, job offers, new friends, and much more. So make the most of your participation, and write carefully. Very large documents should not be posted to mailing lists: deposit them in an archive, or be prepared to distribute them in some other way, and post a short note giving an abstract and explaining how readers can get the full document. -*- 2.2. Mailing List Managers (MLMs) To subscribe to any mailing list run via an MLM `daemon', send e-mail to the daemon at the same site (it's name will depend on which MLM it is). Most daemons maintain more than one mailing list. Being computer programs, with nothing else to do, MLM daemons just sit and wait for e-mail to arrive, read it, and perform the appropriate task, usually immediately. Be careful: just like the daemons of mythology, they respond only to a small set of commands, and they are very literal-minded. If a command doesn't work, re-read the user's guide and check your spelling. Send subscription and other administrative requests to the MLM, not the mailing list; e-mail messages sent directly to the mailing list will (generally) be sent to all the list subscribers. This is embarrassing and doesn't accomplish your goal. Only the MLM (or human administrator, if there is one) can process subscription requests, and the MLM only knows about requests that it receives directly. In addition to handling the membership requests for particular mailing lists, most MLMs daemons also archive all articles sent to each list, and other files contributed by subscribers to the mailing lists. These items can generally be searched and retrieved by e-mail and/or gopher. Eric Thomas's ListServer MLM is the oldest and most elaborate. Thus, it is discussed in greater detail than the other MLMs. Since the other MLMs copy many features from ListServer, you may want to read the section on ListServer, even if you don't need to interact with a ListServer daemon. -*- 2.2.1. AL: Almanac To subscribe to a mailing list run via an Almanac MLM, send the text subscribe to the username `almanac' at the same site as the mailing list. Almanac has few features, compared to ListServer. Some of the commands are: Send this command To do this ------------------------------------------------------------------------ subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list unsubscribe Cancel your subscription help Get the user's guide Besides handling mailing lists, Almanac performs many archive services, including file delivery and even accepting file submissions. Almanac is the vehicle for distribution of a group of USDA market reports and other valuable information, via the main server, almanac@archive.orst.edu, but the user's guide and catalogs are several years out of date. -*- 2.2.2. BH: By Hand Unless another address is given, send subscription requests to the owner using this generic formula: -request@ That is, to subscribe to the `foobar' mailing list, with the address foobar@some.site.somewhere, use foobar-request@some.site.somewhere. Use the *Subject* line To (usually) do this ------------------------------------------------------------------------- help Get information about the mailing list and any special subscription process subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list Many lists are administered by hand, without the benefit of MLMs to handle subscription requests automatically. These are often semi-private lists, and you may be asked to provide some information about yourself before the owner decides to add your name to the list. Please try not to waste the list owner's time: request a subscription only if you are fairly certain you will want to remain subscribed to the list for some time. Send a `help' request first, and follow any directions you get in reply when you send your `subscribe' request. Put the `help' or `subscribe' keyword in the Subject line. Please *do not* send subscription requests to the corresponding `-request' address for lists run via any of the named MLMs listed in this guide. By convention, the `-request' address is an alias for the list owner, who prefers that you contact the daemon directly for routine requests. That said, I should mention that some list owners use mail filtering software to redirect their list-adminstration mail, so the `-request' address may in fact be answered by a daemon. Sometimes the list owner pretends that he or she is a daemon. If you feel confused by all this, you're normal. -*- 2.2.3. BS: BioSci The 70-odd BioSci mailing lists are actually pairs of linked lists, one run via a modified version of the Majordomo (see section []) MLM and the other using other software ("by hand"). Most of these paired lists are also linked to Usenet newsgroups; most readers prefer to access these forums via the newsgroups, but Usenet is not available to many people. If your e-mail is provided by a service in Europe, Africa, or Central Asia, send your subscription request, naming the list(s) you want, to the person at biosci@daresbury.ac.uk Otherwise, send your request in standard Majordomo command format (see below) to biosci-server@net.bio.net If you need help interacting with the daemon on net.bio.net, please contact biosci-help@net.bio.net. To reduce trans-Atlantic network traffic, please try to use the subscription service `nearest' you. A few BioSci mailing lists, those not gated to newsgroups, are run only on net.bio.net; the addresses of these lists have been given explicitly in the tables below. -*- 2.2.4. LE: ListEarn Send subscription requests to listral@ib.rl.ac.uk (or listral@uk.ac.rl.ib from within the United Kingdom's JANET network). This is the only ListEarn daemon mentioned in this Guide. Send this command To do this ------------------------------------------------------------------------- help Get a helpful user's guide subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list signoff Cancel your subscription Note that although ListEarn behaves very much like ListServer, with many similar features, the command for cancelling subscriptions is different. -*- 2.2.5. LP: ListProcessor E-mail subscription requests for mailing lists run via ListProcessor must have blank Subject lines and should have no appended signature text. If your e-mail program automatically adds a signature to your e-mail, use the "quit" command to prevent the daemon from trying to interpret your signature. Send this command To do this ------------------------------------------------------------------------- help Get a helpful user's guide subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list signoff Cancel your subscription quit Make the daemon stop ListProcessor was one of the first MLMs for Unix operating systems, and was designed to appear similar to ListServer. This has resulted in much confusion; many ListProcessor daemons were given the username "listserv" just like the ListServer daemons, but the behavior of these two MLMs is not identical. I have attempted to identify those ListProcessor daemons running under usernames other than "listproc"; with time, they should all switch to "listproc". -*- 2.2.6. LS: ListServer Send subscription requests to username "listserv" at the same address as the mailing list. Send this command To do this ------------------------------------------------------------------------ subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list unsubscribe Cancel your subscription help Get a general overview of ListServer set nomail Stop mail while you're on vacation set digest Get each day's mail as a single file review List all subscribers to index List all archived files for info List all user's guides info ref Get a brief user's guide (Thomas 1993) info faq Answers to frequently asked questions There are roughly 170 ListServer daemons around the world. The `main' one is listserv@BITNIC.educom.edu. ListServer is a very popular MLM with many nice features. Most lists mentioned in this guide are administered using ListServer, so it is well worth your time to read the user's guide. Here is an example of how ListServer works: If Ima Scientist wanted to subscribe to the Smithsonian Institution's biological conservation list, `conslink', she would send the message subscribe conslink Ima Scientist to listserv@SIVM.si.edu. ListServer will determine her e-mail address from the header of her message. Since version 1.7f, ListServer has a very useful feature that lets you receive a daily concatenation (loosely termed a `digest'), with a table of contents, of all articles instead of each article separately. Because many mailing lists administered via a ListServer daemon are popular, the volume of `traffic' may be too large for you to tolerate without using the digest feature. A note for users on JANET nodes (in the United Kingdom): you may be able to get subscriptions to Bitnet ListServer mailing lists via listserv@earn-relay.ac.uk (that is, listserv@uk.ac.earn-relay). Send e-mail to that address with the text info ? for more information. This saves electronic transmission costs by having a single subscription propagated across the Atlantic Ocean, where it is then re-distributed to many subscribers in the UK and Europe. Listserv@SIVM.si.edu keeps an archive of various lists of conservation organizations and field stations, several newsletters, and a large bibliography relating to biological conservation. Listserv@UMDD.umd.edu keeps an archive of job openings and conference announcements submitted to the ECOLOG-L mailing list (aka the Usenet newsgroup sci.bio.ecology). Sending the message "info" to a ListServer daemon will result in a list of helpful documents including: REFcard (LISTSERV REFCARD) Command reference card FAQ (LISTFAQ MEMO ) Frequently Asked Questions PResent (LISTPRES MEMO ) Presentation of LISTSERV for new users GENintro (LISTSERV MEMO ) General information about Revised LISTSERV AFD (LISTAFD MEMO ) Description of Automatic File Distribution To get any one of these, send the message "info " where is, for instance, "REFcard" or "FAQ". Only the portion in capitals is required. -*- 2.2.7. MB: Mailbase For more information and instructions on using mailbase, send e-mail to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk (or mailbase@uk.ac.mailbase from within JANET) with the appropriate command in the body of the e-mail. Here are just a few: Send this command To do this -------------------------------------------------------------------------- subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list unsubscribe Cancel your subscription suspend mail Stop e-mail coming while you are away help Get a summary of Mailbase commands help Get help on a specific command send mailbase user-faq Answers to frequently asked questions index mailbase Get a list of help documents send mailbase user-guide Get the lengthly User's Guide send mailbase user-card Get a short version of the Guide stop Make Mailbase ignore your `signature' If your e-mail program appends a signature or other text to your e-mail, please add `stop' as the last command. Mailbase will accept `join' for `subscribe' and `leave' for `unsubscribe'. If all else fails, you can contact the mailing list owner via the e-mail address -request@mailbase.ac.uk, where is replaced by the name of the mailing list in question. And if even that doesn't work (the list owner is on vacation or otherwise unavailable and you just cannot wait), then write to mailbase-helpline@mailbase.ac.uk. -*- 2.2.8. MD: Majordomo To subscribe to a mailing list managed by a Majordomo daemon, send your request to the username `majordomo' at the same site as the list. Send this command To do this ------------------------------------------------------------------------- subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list unsubscribe Cancel your subscription help Get a concise user's guide lists Get a list of available mailing lists info Get a description of the list topic end Make Majordomo ignore your `signature' -*- 2.2.9. MS: Mailserv To subscribe to a mailing list managed via the Mailserv MLM, send your request to the username `mailserv' at the same site as the list. Send this command To do this ------------------------------------------------------------------------- subscribe Subscribe to the mailing list unsubscribe Cancel your subscription help Get a brief user's guide lists List all mailing lists at the site -*- 2.3. Running Your Own Mailing List Yes, you too can be the proud owner of a mailing list. There are various mailing lists devoted to the discussion of mailing list administration: see section 2.4.17 for pointers to some of them. -*- 2.4. Mailing Lists Sorted by Topic For subscription instructions, see the relevant sections (above) indicated by the two letter code given before each list address. See the footnotes below each table for special instructions. Mailing list types: F Forum for open discussion on relevant topics. Usually, subscription services are automated and open to anyone, but some may admit subscribers only after an evaluation. M Moderated forum; off-topic or otherwise inappropriate articles may be refused by one or more moderators. Most moderators will admit most articles. Editing is rare. D Digest; articles are bundled for distribution in groups. Usually moderated, often edited. N Newsletter; more formal than a digest. Almost always strictly moderated and heavily edited. O Official notices only; unsolicited contributions are generally not accepted.
