French Guiana still offers an excellent opportunity to study undisturbed lowland rainforest as well over 90% of this Department of France in northeastern South America is covered by forest. Approximately 7 km to the north of Sal in central French Guiana, a small, private research station has been established to facilitate the work of biologists wishing to study the plants and animals of the Guayana floristic province. The facilities are primitive but comfortable. Sleeping is done in well-constructed hammock shelters and meals are available. Forest, with an extensive trail network, surrounds the facility. The major ecological impact in the area is caused by a limited amount of hunting. The price is approximately $40/day depending upon the current rate of exchange for the French franc.
