SOUTH DAKOTA Authorized 4 March 1917, MONTANA (BB-51) was laid down 1 September 1920; but construction of the SOUTH DAKOTA-class battleship by Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Calif., was canceled 8 February 1922 by the Washington Treaty on the limitation of naval armament.
