            "INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ROMANIA"

Bucharest, November 19th, 1993. - After calling on, President Ion Iliescu in
Bucarest today, Sir Dudley Smith, M.P., President of the WEU Assembly, said:
"Romania has gained international recognition for the key role played in
helping to apply the UN embargo on the Danube - an action which speaks louder
than words and which has involved considerable economic sacrifice. I have no
hesitation in supporting the idea of a more formal link between the WEU and
Romania and the other Central European States which have association
agreements with the European Union. I urge our Ministers to give the subject
positive consideration when the WEU Council meets next Monday in Luxembourg".

While in Romania, Sir Dudley Smith discussed questions affecting European
security with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Teodor Melescanu, the
Minister of National Defence, General Niculae Spiroiu, the President of the
Senate, Professor Oliviu Gherman, the Vice-President of the Chamber of
Deputies, Mr. Ion Ratiu, and a wide range of parliamentarians and civilian
and military leaders.

Bucharest, 19 Novembre 1993 - Apres avoir rencontre le President Ilion
Iliescu aujourd'hui a Bucharest, Sir Dudley Smith, M.P. President de
l'Assemblee de l'UEO a declare: " Le role joue par la Roumanie dans l'
application de l'embargo des Nations Unies sur le Danube est reconnu par la
communaute internationale. Il s'agit d'une action qui parle mieux que des
mots et qui a comporte des sacrifices economiques considerables. Je n'ai
aucune hesitation a appuyer l'idee d'un lien plus formel entre l'UEO et la
Roumanie, ainsi qu'avec les autres pays d'Europe Centrale qui ont des accords
d'association avec l'Union Europeenne. Je demande instamment a nos ministres
qui se reuniront en Conseil de l'UEO lundi, a Luxembourg, d'envisager ce
sujet de maniere positive."

Au cours de son sejour en Roumanie, Sir Dudley a evoque differentes questions
relatives a la securite europeenne avec le Ministre des affaires etrangeres,
M. Teodor Melescanu, the Ministre de la defense nationale, le General Nicolae
Spiroiu, le President du Senat, le Professeur Oliviu Gherman, le Vice-
President de la Chambre des Deputes, M. Ion Ratiu, ainsi qu'avec de nombreux
autres parlementaires et personnalites civiles et militaires.
