U.S. ARMY MILITARY HISTORY INSTITUTE REFBIBS Welcome to the U.S. Army Military History Institute's automated version of reference bibliographies, notes, brief reports, and various lists collectively known as "refbibs." Refbibs identify and organize by subject, sources on file at the Institute, many of which are unique or scarce. By design, refbibs are working lists that should be considered indicative, not exhaustive, of the source materials held at the MHI. They are continuously expanded, updated, and refined as more materials are received, organized and cataloged. To transfer any refbib or information file to your computer, send an electronic mail message to "info@carlisle-emh2.army.mil". In the subject field of the message, enter the electronic filename of the refbib you wish to transfer followed by the four-digit extension ".asc". Leave the text portion of your mail message blank and send the message as you normally would. When the message is received at Carlisle Barracks, the automatic response system will locate the requested file and send a copy back to you. Upon receipt in your electronic mailbox, you may transfer the file into your local word processor and edit as desired. (All refbib and information files are ASCII text files). You must send a separate electronic mail message for each refbib you wish to transfer. Before attempting to transfer a refbib to your computer, you may wish to transfer one or more of the following information files to assist you in identifying and using the refbib(s) you require. If you are a frequent user of refbibs, you are encouraged to download the pertinent Table of Contents files on a quarterly or semi-annual basis. Table of Contents These files, one for each letter of the Files alphabet, will assist you in determining (A.asc thru the contents and electronic filename of Z.asc) refbibs. Each is identified as a single letter of the alphabet followed by the extension ".asc". For example, if you are interested in the subject, "Afghanistan," transfer the "A.asc" file to your computer. In that file, you will find listed: AFGHANISTAN (afghan) First Afghan War, 1839-42.............p.2 Second Afghan War, 1878-1880..........p.3 Afghan-Soviet Conflict, 1979-1989.....p.4 NOTE: The name in parenthesis in lower case, in this example (afghan), is the electronic filename to use when transferring the actual file to your computer. ABBREV.asc This file contains a listing of special abbreviations and acronyms used in preparing refbibs excluding common abbreviations like "vol" for volume or "U.S." for United States. Keyword Files These files, one for each letter of the alphabet, will assist you in determining (keyA.asc thru which refbibs contain information on a keyZ.asc) particular subject. These files begin with the lower-case word "key" followed by the uppercase letter of the alphabet, plus the usual suffix ".asc". (as in keyA.asc, keyB.asc, keyC.asc, etc.). For example, if you wish to learn which refbib lists sources on "tank destroyers", transfer the "keyT.asc" file to your computer. In that file, you will find that sources on "tank destroyers" are contained in the "armor4" file, which can then be transferred to your computer. For more details on the keyword files, transfer the "keyintro.asc" file to your computer. Further information on the contents of refbibs can be obtained from the Reference Branch, USAMHI, Carlisle Barracks, PA 17013- 5008.
