What is it
db 2.7.7 (Berkeley DB) is a programmatic toolkit that provides high-performance embedded database support for both traditional and client/server applications.

The Berkeley DB access methods include B+tree, Extended Linear Hashing, Fixed and Variable-length records. Berkeley DB also includes full transactional support and database recovery, online backups, and separate access to locking, logging and shared memory caching subsystems.

Berkeley DB supports C, C++, Java and Perl APIs, and is available for a wide variety of UNIX platforms as well as Windows '95 and Windows NT (MSVC 4 and 5).

The final Version 2 release, version 2.7.7, is API and database format compatible with earlier 2.X releases. If you have an existing application which used an earlier 2.X release, you will be able to download and build version 2.7.7 without making any changes.

In November of 1999, Sleepycat Software released Version 3.0 of Berkeley DB. The 3.X code line includes major new features, some of which require a database format upgrade. Release 3 also modified the Berkeley DB API. Applications developed using version 2 of Berkeley DB will need to be upgraded in order to use release 3.X.
Developers should use the latest 3.X code, and are encourage you to port your 2.X application to the 3.X interfaces. If you have any difficult in making the transition, please contact Sleepycat and they will provide assistance. Sleepycat Software intends to discontinue support for the 2.X code line at some time in the future.
