I think the answer to all of this is David Levine's messages
"Frequencies" and "Frequency Addendum", April 4th. The messages
are simple amplitude-modulated radio signals. An AM radio 
is the canonical device to translate this into sound; it doesn't
require any electronics (consider a crystal radio receiver.)
