Wood Waste Best Practices Contract Awarded to IRU

The Clean Washington Center awarded its 1997 Best Practices contract to
International Resources Unlimited (IRU). The Eugene, Oregon based firm will
create a Wood Waste Best Practices Manual and conduct workshops based on
these practices. Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB), of Falls Church,
Virginia and Green Solutions, of South Prairie, Washington are also included
in the Project Team.

IRU is a nationally and internationally recognized consulting firm on wood
waste recovery and utilization. IRU has a long history of providing
engineering and strategic planning assistance to the wood products industry,
of which the wood waste recycling sector is quickly becoming an important
sub-industry. For the past 15 years, IRU staff has assisted clients in the
wood products industry in pioneering the utilization of wood waste feedstocks
in their manufacturing processes.

The purpose of the Best Practices Manuals and Workshops is to maximize the
cost and performance benefits of using wood waste materials in manufacturing
and production processes. Best Practices are proven methods and techniques
that enable the effective implementation of a technology or material usage.

The Wood Waste Best Practices Manual will contain sixty Best Practices,
categorized under four general headings: Sourcing, Processing, Manufacturing,
and End Use Applications.

The workshops will be held in different regions of the United States during
March and April, 1997, at yet to be determined locations. The Project Team
will seek co-sponsors for these workshops. While the workshops will be based
on the technical content of the manual, they will be commodity-specific
sessions, tailored to meet the needs of the regional participants.
Interactive sessions, using local industry examples to demonstrate the
implementation of the Best Practices, will be emphasized at each regional
workshop.

IRU began conducting Focus Group meetings on Dec. 9, 1996 in Seattle,
Washington to identify possible Best Practices. For more information, please
