switchgrass is a good alternative...it is excellent for small game cover, it
is persistent, it is widely adapted, it is of high quality for ruminants and
seed are available.  

a couple of problems.... getting stands consistently because of dormant
seeds and it will not take up high levels of N.  it grows very well with low
fertility inputs.

eastern gamagrass is another one to consider.
