RE: forages for riparian zones

Jimmy .... Howdy,

Might consider switchgrass. It offers very robust growth that can compete with some of the woody plants, is persistent, good forage quality, makes a excellent fine fuel if burning fits in with the overall management plan, and offers both food and cover to some wildlife. Establishment can be tough between dormant seed and crabgrass competition. Lastly, if not grazed or mowed some it can become quite "clumpy" in its basal cover and leave some bare ground between plants. It is very competitive with other warm season bunchgrasses such as big and little bluestem and generally crowds them out in short order. Indiangrass will compete better, but without fire will be lost from the stand in a few years. All South Carolina work and observation .....YMMV (your mileage may vary).

I need to develop some ideas on forages for riparian zones that would
be an alternative to the woody or shrubby type species and that would
probably be more attractive to cattle farmers.

What do you think about including 5 lb of perennial ryegrass in mixes
with other cool season grasses to help in establishment.

These mixes will be used in the central and north/northeastern
Kentucky area.

Any suggestions or insights would be welcome.
