MAFF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTSHIP

Applications are invited for a three year research studentship funded by
MAFF to work on a project entitled:

"Estimation of nitric oxide emissions from agricultural soils".

The project will be jointly supervised by research staff from SAC and ITE
in Edinburgh and focuses on the effect of land use (including fertiliser
application and cropping) on nitric oxide release from soils. Field and
laboratory studies will be carried out to examine relevant processes
responsible, and to understand spatial and temporal variability of NO
production. This in turn will allow improved estimates of NO production on
a regional scale to be made.

If you are interested in the above studentship, you must have or expect to
gain a first or upper second class honours degree in an appropriate
scientific discipline and would be expected to register for a PhD. A
current driving licence would be desirable.

You are welcome to contact either of the supervisors (Dr R Rees, SAC, 0131
535 4175, or Dr U Skiba, ITE, 0131 445 8532) in order to obtain further
information before applying. If you wish to apply, a letter of application
should be sent together with a copy of your current cv to:

Dr U M Skiba
Institute of Terrestrial Ecology
Bush Estate
Edinburgh EH26 OQB

The closing date for applications has been extended and is now 2 July.
