INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
August 11, 1997

Position:  Director, University of Nebraska Northeast Research and Extension
Center, Norfolk Nebraska

Duties:  General responsibility includes leadership and administration of
extension and research

Responsibilities:  programs at the Northeast Research and Extension Center,
Norfolk; the Haskell Agricultural Laboratory, Concord; and the 16-county
Northeast District. This includes 36 faculty with 	extension or research
appointments of which 10 are Specialists and 26 are Educators based in county
offices and 24 support or paraprofessional staff.

Specific duties include: management of personnel, budgets, and facilities;
leadership in the procurement of funds to support new and existing programs
impacting both youth and adults, the Director is responsible for fostering a
creative environment for all faculty and staff members; development and support
of close working relationships with advisory boards, committees, county
extension boards, commodity groups and other users of University programs; and
outreach to culturally diverse populations. Distance education programs, credit
and non-credit, will also require leadership of the Director along with the
development of the Northeast Lifelong Learning Center. The Director will also
coordinate programs with other University of Nebraska units and other
post-secondary partners.

The Director is administratively equivalent to a department head and coordinates
with appropriate Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR)
department heads for developing and implementing subject matter programs. The
Director is administratively responsible to the Dean and Director, Cooperative
Extension Division, and the Dean and Director, Agricultural Research Division
and the Vice Chancellor, IANR

Qualifications:  Doctorate degree. Preferred areas include agriculture, natural
resources, family and consumer sciences, adult education, or areas related to
administration. Must meet requirements for rank of professor. Candidates with
appropriate qualifications can be considered for tenure in an IANR unit.
Demonstrated effectiveness in administration, extension and/or research and
demonstrated strong leadership capabilities and written/oral communication
skills are required. Ability to relate to faculty and staff, agricultural and
business community, industry, and the general public 	necessary. Visionary
team leadership skills are essential. Commitment and desire to become visible in
the community by assuming appropriate leadership role are necessary.
Understanding of the land-grant system and background or experience in distance
education are desired.

Salary/Benefits:  Salary commensurate with experience and training. Life,
health, and long term disability insurance programs as well as family coverage
are available at reasonable group rates. TIAA/CREF and/or Fidelity Investment
Fund are offered as retirement plans. A Federa1 Civil Service appointment is
available to a successful candidate currently in the civil service retirement
system.
