hydroponics

To All Sanetters,
Something I never understood: how can soilless crop growth be economically
competitive with soil-full (?) crop growth? What are the economic and
agronomic/horticultural advantages of growing crops within a controlled
environment? Have there been economic analyses of such comparisons? I can
understand how such systems might be beneficial in cold, sunny climates to,
for example grow tomatoes, but how come I see hydroponically grown tomatoes
(albeit more expensive -- and uniform -- than their conventional counterparts)
in my local grocery store?

Thanks for any insights.
