The objective of the conference is to improve conservation-based management
of estuaries affected by spartina and to promote regional, national and
global communication on all issues concerning the nderstanding and control
of spartina as an aquatic weed.
The conference will be divided into five subject areas (sessions):
1) The policy of handling invasive aquatic species like spartina
2) The biology of spartina species and changes they cause in estuary ecology;
3) Distribution (regional and global by species) and population dynamics;
4) Efficacy and ecology impacts of the various control methods
5) Intrinsic value of invasive species.
Session Format: Oral presentations limited to 15 minutes, poster displays
during the symposium, keynote speakers at each session, panel discussions,
and group participation.
Who should attend? Anyone interested in biology and ecology of estuaries,
policies of management of invasive species, aquatic weed control, population
dynamics, tidal land owners with spartina, public and private land managers,
federal and state agency policy makers, environmental toxicologists and risk
assessment personnel.
Registration fees and deadlines:
Registration fee (postmarked by 2/1/97): $100
Late registration fee (by 3/1/97): $120
Very late registration fee (at the door): $140
Student registration (by 2/1/97): $35
(students will be asked to help at the conference)
