American Minor Breeds Conservancy and, most particularly, Heifer
International are good groups to contact. However in tropical countries, you
are better off with the Indian breeds of Asian water buffalo for dairy. I
believe that there is an Asian Water Buffalo Society in Indonesia. Asian
water buffalo produce better on rough feed, have equivalent production
potential, and their milk is 16 percent higher than the Western breeds in
solids (butterfat & protein). They are also more resistant to tropical and
subtropical climates and cattle diseases. If you don't get addresses from
others on this list, email me privately and I'll get them from our directory,
TRIP (The Resources of International Permaculture). (TRIP is also for sale
in print or computer disk versions.)
