Agricultural Systems Research in South Africa

A three-year postgraduate studentship is available from
February/March 1997. The successful candidate will register for a
MPhil and/or PhD degree in the School of Natural and Environmental
Sciences, Coventry University, although most of the time will be
spent undertaking field work in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

The research will form part of the Integrated Land-use Systems
Research Project for the Communal Areas of the Eastern Cape (South
Africa) and one of the following topics will be studied depending on
the interests and qualifications of the successful applicant.

Topic 1. Improving nutrient cycling in communal farming systems in
the Eastern Cape.

Topic 2. The relationship between socio-economic groupings, the
farming systems they employ, and the contribution farming makes to
the livelihood of rural households in communal areas of central
Eastern Cape.

Topic 3. Actual and potential contribution of arable land to
livestock production systems in communal areas of central Eastern
Cape.

The financial package includes tuition fees, airfares, a maintenance
grant of stlg4000 pa and free accommodation and services in South
Africa. All local transport and research costs in South Africa are
covered.

Applicants should have a good UK honours degree or equivalent in an
appropriate discipline, an interest in sustainable agriculture
development, and an ability to undertake independent research
overseas as part of a multidisciplinary team.
