The Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society is proud to announce its
upcoming Western Conference, to be held Saturday, February 1, 1997, in
Sidney, Nebraska.
Tom Frantzen, Iowa farmer, will present the keynote speech, entitled, "Free
Your Brain and Your Behind will Follow." Tom successfully changed from
raising hogs in confinement to pasture farrowing on his farm in Iowa. Along
the way, Tom has thought a lot about how farmers make decisions and how they
view the world around them. Tom's refreshingly blunt observations are
guaranteed to make you laugh and give you a new perspective.
Workshop topics include wind power in western Nebraska; matching calving
with forage availability; controlling weeds with crop rotation; the role of
legumes in cropping systems; prospects for the beef market; organic
gardening; and a special 2-session focus on alternative marketing: I.
Alternative enterprises: pastured poultry and beekeeping, and II. Direct
marketing strategies.
Western Nebraska has a very different climate and topography from eastern
Nebraska, so agricultural concerns are specific to this area. The NSAS
western conference is the premiere source of information on sustainable
agriculture in the western part of the state.
