... the seriousness of the impact that last week's ice storm has had on
the inhabitants and their environment in Eastern Canada and the North-
eastern United States. It has been described as the worst ice storm
in a century which deposited as much as 10 cm of ice in certain regions.
There are still millions of people without electrical power, and
according to news reports today, electricity will not be restored until
next month to many areas - not a pleasant prospect for those trying to
stay warm with temperatures dropping to -20C and lower. Media reports
on the weekend showed mature sugar maple (Acer saccharum) woodlots that
had ALL of the tree crowns broken off, resembling the appearance of a
bomb site - experts predict that it will take decades for these trees to
recover to their former levels of sugar sap production.
