I also am interested in seeing woodlands expanded as ecosystems within our 
suburban habitat and retail/industrial areas, and as preserves within 
parks.

On that subject, one of the better books I've come across is titled:

"Woodland Stewardship: A practical guide for midwestern landowners" by 
Baughman, Alm, Reed, Eiber and Blinn  (1993)
published by the Minnesota Extension Service - University of Minnesota, the 
Minnesota Dept of Natural Resources and the Forest Stewardship Program.

(ISBN 0-9623116-6-9)
