Several projects in the Portland, Ore. area guide parking lot runoff to
shallow basins or swales in medians and around the perimeter of the lot.
There its allowed to percolate into the soil. Wetlands plants and the
soil appear to be left with the task of "processing" the waste. I always
wondered how the plants tolerated the oil and chemicals from cars; and
whether long-term contamination would occur. Perhaps others can shed some
light on this?
