Ron,

You've caught onto some of the most important points. Another is the
energy/water efficiency of the commercial-size washers compared to the
usually compact washers found in most apartments. Most of the American
and all of the European manufacturers of washing machines have released
high-efficiency horizontal-axis washers in the last year that use 20-30%
less energy and water (including less dryer energy due to better spin
drying) and less detergent than models prominent on the market just
recently.
