A friend of mine who is an R2000 contractor used a form of cellulose in
his basement that is blown in (sprayed ? - didn't see it) mixed with a
white-glue type binder. I've also seen it in a number of local R2000
houses. The backing looks like burlap and I believe is carpet backing.
He said it was comparable in cost to doing fiberglass, and that either
CMHC or NRC tests showed it to have superior as-installed R value
because of the complete absence of voids, something impossible to
achieve with batts unless you have very fastidious installers (yeah,
right).
