GBlist: Re: Virus Alert (Recommendations)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
RE --"AOL4FREE.COM"
Please! do not resend these "alerts" all over the place !!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good virus protection is WORK, not luck or sending alerts!
0. Important - Back up your system frequently on tape, or using one
of the commercially available Jumbo-disk drives (Iomega, Syquest...)
....... then practice safe computing / web surfing ..........
1. Get a good virus protection suite (McAfee, Norton, IBM, Solomans etc.)
and really use it !
2. Follow recommendation #1 frequently ( I scan at least 1x per week)
3. a. If you have an "advanced" e-mail client you can set "taboos" so
that any e-mail that comes in with a header or word in message on
the list of exclusions is either erased or filed off the bootdrive.
b. automated mailing list software like Majordomo can also set
exclusions. For example, a list owner could set the list to exclude
all messages with file attachments of "com" "doc" "xls" or "exe"
to exclude execuitable files from ever making the rounds.
4. Go to various web sites like http://www.microsoft.com and download
"reader" files for Word for Windows and Excel, so the files never
execute the host programs -- this helps defeat the insideous "macro"
virii which can be a real nuisance.
5. Remember these notices are themselves really "human-factors" viruses
since they replicate, and infest other peoples computers. So DON'T
Pass them on...
Perhaps the list could make policy not to have discussions about virus
related problems but refer people to selected virus prevention websites.
