The agressive medium this
is not a science rather to stress
emotion not physics what isn't a traitor
to perception a god in a dime store in hell
there will be no damage of the sex of the deal
kill us while you can still kill yourselves
draw a sawtoothed line across your skin
that's what we are no great humanists
no candles in the dark

Dedicated to WSB, still writing through the western lands.

It seems all my heros are now dead and WSB was
one of my favorites. Ever since I first heard an ESP
Sampler from "Call me Burroughs", I have been a fan. I
saw him perform live in the 70's in Ann Arbor. Just Last
Week I found a re-release of "Call Me Burroughs" on the
Internet on tunes.com. If you've never heard it, get a copy
and be prepared to laugh your ass off and be dazzeled!

Break through in grey room!!!

WSB has to be one of the most influential individuals in my life.
I have a page on my website which has some of my thoughts on WSB.
In reading and thinking about WSB there is the sheer intensity of
influence that WSB has had on Western culture during the last
forty years.
Postmodern culture would be a different creature if WSB hadn't
existed.
WSB has exerted a tremendous influence on the most popular of
music trends: From the Futurist Arts movement to free jazz
to the emerging noise movement now there is the huge visage
of WSB staring in the deconditioning of mind.

William S. Burroughs KICKS THE BUCKET WAKE will be held at Rebis
Galleries, 1930 South Broadway, Denver, CO, 80210, ph 3036981841.
Sunday, August 10, 8 p.m. and the shooting begins at 9:30.
Readings, film/video, testamonials, and original work will be
at the WAKE. This is the big send off for WSB into SILENCE.

Now that Burroughs is gone I feel just that little bit more alone in the world. I'm not gay, nor a drug user, nor a lover of guns, yet I feel as though I am the same species as Bill. It's hard to believe there will be no more books, no more paintings, no more records. God knows, he gave us enough, but still ... What a terrible shame that he had to die in a fucking hospital. Remember what he wrote in "Interzone"? That he'd rather die anywhere other than a hospital. I'll miss him terribly. My heart aches. Motel, motel, motel, loneliness moans across the still, oily, tidal, waters of east Texas bayou. Goodbye, Bill, moral vested Gentleman.

Thanks for all the images.
Thanks for all that virus.
Thanks for all the memories and inspirations. The
random father of pasting and folding. Say hi to Brion from
those of us who are yet to go. Your influence on me has not
yet reached a definite conclusion in me yet.

I don't know the first thing about William S Burroughs.
I have heard his name and heard mention of the Naked Lunch
But after reading all these comments from people all around
the world on the effect that this great name has played on
their lives I will very shortly have to increase my area of
knowledge. Here is a quote from a posting I mad to a
mailing list reciently "Remember you are not allowed to
think for yourselves you must only copy the Stereotypes
that have carefully been selected for you. You are a robot
in society and when you die the world will be no different
for you having lived a lifetime upon it." Well the purpose
of this message was to get people to think to get people
motivated, to get people to live their lives. When I read
all the word that have been posted here about William he
is exactly what I aspire to be in concept. I don't believe
in imposing one personal beliefs on other but I just wish
that everyone in this world would just think a little more.
Oh well I best stop my self indulgent ramble now, stop this
little voice in my head speaking to you all and come back
to the world of reality, but this time energised, inspired
postive and motivated by a man author who's words I have
never even read. William S Burroughs does still live,
he lives in the words he wrote himself, and he lives in
the minds and memory's of all the people who have taken
time to share with others their thoughts on these very pages.
Keep the dream alive...

As I reflect with you as my audience, I'm struck by my appreciation of their (the beatniks) and his (Borroughs) contribution.
As a Christian, it would appear that much of W.S. is the anti-thesis of the life I choose to lead and what and who I choose to follow. There is a warm spot for them, however, that deserves further investigation.
Yes, it seems an era has ended with the passing of W.S. Borroughs. The Naked Lunch, 'language is a virus', and his wonder conversation in CREEM with David Cronenburg among other things are still with us. What an influence on Americana, art, intellectual pursuit, pursuit of truth..
When I was in San Francisco a couple of years ago, I tried to "walk the same path" as one of his compatriots, (Jack Kourack) in Haight-Ashbury. I was looking for a bar, cafe, SOMETHIN' bearing his mark. I ended up bumming a cigarette butt in exchange for some change and entering a bar to have a shot of Jack Daniels in memory/celebration of the contribution of the Beat poets, writers, musicians, artists, in celebration of their existence. The cigarette was nasty (I don't smoke), the shot was strong, the gesture was sweet. I won't bore you... I'm on a roll and feel like writing right NOW.

It begins as an insistent whisper,a surging moan that pulsates inside your head like you cant believe. Its not that you cant;you don't
want to . you don't want to give in to what you've been told is wrong. But the pounding gets harder, faster, and you know that the second birth, the real birth is upon you,
The junk, the tide of detritus, of the living shit that swamps and strangles the modern man. Burroughs dug that,he always dug that. As the shit storm swirled about him, around him ,
through him and past him he always dug that. Rimbaud in his saintly vanity, saw that the path of excess consumption & extensive exposure to the perils of narcosis could lead to becoming a visionary.
That's how I see Bill Burroughs
There is a word little used in the instant world of today: Seer
Here's to Bill the last Seer

I couldn't believe that he was still alive when I started reading his work about Christmas this year. What a great advert for drug abuse. But now I suppose we can't use that one. Ho-hum. Perhaps the end of an era or perhaps not. I don't know and he probably didn't care. What an expert. What a man. Sane as the hills. Cold grass chicken in a house full of screaming and non screaming busnissmen investing in trains. I don't think repetition is really necessary.

A tribute to William S. Burroughs. (1914-1997)
text rearangement from "Playback from Watergate
to Eden" and "Electronic Revolution", edited.

The virus strains.

Let us attempt

the details of the clue for their replication.
Beat, start with street recorders. So you see a wise
old proprietor, doctored radio communications
unintelligible but from passing strangers. See how we
will take in altered mutter line out
of scrambled message more pictures you need. So
you know the body and brainwave recordings but for

Burroughs said to me once, 'Death comes in all shapes and sizes.' In an important way, he will not be missed, as his rechanneling of language and thought so permeates these last years of the 20th century that his essence remains. For writers like myself, he was both a challenge and a path. He helped melt down the divide between our perceptions of reality and dreams. We are all poorer for his passing.

Burroughs was the first 'beat ' author i really got into.
i picked up his biography out of all things while working at a library , then naked lunch and well i was hooked. i was so shocked to hear of his death , mainly because the day before
i'd picked up a photography mag with a picture of allen, and him and i'd actually wondered how old is he again? i wonder if he'll leave us soon .. i guess its true the beat has died. then that very nite at like 1 on-line i found out that he'd passed away. the lack of media coverage has me really pissed off but i'm sure bill doesn't really mind never needed them in life anyway ... i guess thats all ... never really did see it fit to cry for him ... i don't think he'd like that

I only got into Burroughs about a year or two ago and dispite that he has had a more profound impact on my writing then anyone (save for Ginsberg) I remember the night before he had died is was discussing what I would do if he passed on to a good friend of mine, I decided I didn't want to live if the Beat Generation died but my friend made me promise that I wouldn't kill myself. The next night my sister told me and I totally broke down, I'm fine now but the lack of media coverage bothers me, Old Bull Lee is probably having a great laugh at all our expenses, down in Ohio or Kansas, holed up with Elvis and Kurt Cobain.

move due to the dulled window barring it's life from me.
the warm sun that chokes, cliches, stupid grief that isn't
mine. horror at the two line obits in newspapers i despise.
the words that keep being reread, tapes heard, more

Although Burroughs first struck my consciousness through Kerouac's writing, it was in 1980 that I first met him -- he was sitting on my couch smoking a thick joint, wearing suit and hat and holding cane -- I was startled to see this elderly man smoking pot,but he introduced himself and shook my hand as a friend...
This was just before he moved to Lawrence, at a party in his honor being held in my loft apt. by James.

Burroughs made Lawrence his home. I remember him walking at
dawn in the Mass. st. Dillon's grocery store parking lot
as I drove to work...him waving at me from a car downtown...
him reading from his books at the Kansas Union and at Beat literary
fests at the Lawrence Opera House.

Once, while living in South America, I picked up an issue of Spin
Magazine and found a biting letter written by Burroughs
defending Lawrence against jaded views of New York
journalists who had libeled his new home.

In Lawrence Burroughs wrote, created paintings and worked with
teenage punk rockers.

When a phone call came from Lawrence to tell me of his death,
I was, strangely enough, reading a passage from Neal
Cassidy's THE FIRST THIRD which describes in three or four
paragraphs Old Bull Lee's life. Just before the phone rang,
I thought to myself that Burroughs was mortal, that he was
one of the last of the Beat inner circle, that he had out lived
Ginsberg, Cassidy, Kerouac.....that one day he too would
exit ...

And then, the phone rang.

Ah Pook, and myself - Bill !
Pusilanimous thoughts,
let our future
step on thy grave
Behold, on every bead of sweat
on every beat of sweat
gone and done for
there's a hidden tear,
tear thy soul apart !

Lock them out and block the door
smear them out forever more, lock them out
lock his mind and door his mind
three times three to make up nine
Curse go back, curse go back
back with double pain and lack
curse go back, curse go back
back with double fear and flack
Silver arrow thru the night
silver arrow take thy flight
silver arrow seek and find
piercing heart and piercing mind!
CURSE GO BACK

mr william mr burroughs the great secret agent the monolithic literary enema man. what can one say? he's out there in the place of dead roads- in the western lands in subways at dawn in st louis in autumn persimmon. now he is leaves blowing down the street- now he's dim faraway flickering words and perhaps a light chuckle. i thank him for all those places he wrote about - that he gave away to everyone- those places and mind/spirit states that he's now BECOME. He's alone but not lonely with legions of wildboys in an infinite myriad array of dreamers passing on to stay. right now is a great time to read his book of dreams. of course it may haunt you to your bones(so take off your skin} calling out through the centuries "that was me into thin air..." a galaxy of supernovae pulled down the sky the day william burroughs asked death it's question. i hope he finds restaurants with food and hotels with beds a nd clear cool streams with salmon and places with clocks without time- here then and forever in the land of his dead.

The past few days have been immensely darkened. After remaining stoicly inebriated for every day since his passing, i can now say that i now truely understand what it was that he was trying to say. However it is different in every other's interpretation, and so i urge others to persevere, as his message ran on a very fundamental level, though always in the disguise of a ripping good yarn. Quite similar to the Bible in that respect...
Because he was the last to go, it is now time for others and ourselves continue his work in whatever way possible. There is nothing supernatural about it; it is merely a fact of life that anyone who wishes to make contact with him will inevitably have him sitting on the end of their bed, shaking his head and saying "WAKE UP, fools; there is work to be done."

Having already achieved immortality,
With only the flesh to ward off decay.

Well, it appears Mr. Weeli-yam has in fact left the theatre; whether he's lurking in the wings is another question. I feel fairly certain he could pull a Jesus or a Lazarus routine if he wanted, but I don't think he'd stoop so low. Beneath the dignity of a man like WSB.
Anyhoo, we all know he was without peer and mining a completely personal field, but just on the off chance anyone is looking for similarly potent stuff, you might try:

"Beat Hotel" by Harold Norse
"TAZ" by Hakim Bey
"Cosmic Trigger" by Robert Anton Wilson
"Four Texts" by Antonin Artaud
"Crash" by J.G. Ballard
"The Process" by Brion Gysin
"Valis" by Philip K. Dick

Geez Bill, this is a bitch. Hope it wasn't painful. Bet you'd love to splice all these obits together, eh? Sorry that I didn't get over for a match; kept putting it off. FYI, the City Fathers in Lawrence are shitting bricks; I don't think they appreciate being caught in this sort of spotlight. See ya in a better place, guy. Out.
